Futurama is back! :)

Don't know if anyone knows this but:

Holy Bender Bending Rodríguez!Six years after getting axed by Fox, Futurama is being resurrected on Comedy Central.

A spokesperson for 20th Century Fox Television confirms that the cable net has ordered 26 new episodes of Matt Groening and David X. Cohen's late, great animated series to air beginning in 2010. The studio cites Futurama's "blockbuster" performance on DVD and in reruns on Comedy Central as the reason for its rebirth.

Hmmm... sound familiar?

"When we brought back Family Guy several years ago, everyone said that it was a once in a lifetime thing -- that canceled series stay canceled and cannot be revived," 20th Century Fox TV Chairmen Gary Newman and Dana Walden said in a joint statement. "But Futurama was another series that fans simply demanded we bring back, and we couldn’t have been happier when Matt and David agreed that there were many more stories yet to tell."
Adds Groening: "We’re thrilled Futurama is coming back. We now have only 25,766 episodes to make before we catch up with Bender and Fry in the year 3000."

I have a hunch Groening isn't the only one doing a happy dance. (That's your cue to start filling up the comments section.)

Awesome! :D

Now, mind you, I know the films were a little lackluster compared to the television show but I would like to think that was due to the constraints of the format (feature length, but can be chopped up into four episodes). By returning to a regular series format, perhaps they'll return back to form.

There's a thread already in General Sci-Fi, but I'll restate this: this is good news and I can't wait to see new episodes. :techman:

Hot shit this is awesome news! I loved the movies (well, I'm a bit iffy with the second one), but I admit they don't hold a candle to the series.

I can only hope the return doesn't suck like Family Guy's did...

Ths is only awesome of MAtt and Cohen still have creative control. The story I read was "Futurama" wasnt' so much as cancelled as was Matt refused to give uyp creative control to FOX over the series (see the last ten+ years of "The Simpsons" to see what creative control by FOX is like...). FOX insisted, Matt didn't budge. New season was aroudn the corer, neither side would let go, and ultimately it was never added toe line up and Matt's group disbanded.

I retract my earlier statement of welcoming new episodes. I will welcome them after confirmation Matt (and hopefully Cohen) still have creative control.

^ Why wouldn't it? The episodes in the films are going to be broken up to make the season preceeding this one...

Because it sucked? :p

its good to hear that Futurama is going to return. I was getting the feeling that it was going to happen since the movies seemed to have done decent business but I'm glad to hear its actually going to happen

I assume it is being asked because it ends with the crew of the Planet Express ship flying into a blackhole. So however this new season starts, it needs to deal with the ramifications of that.

(am I the only one hoping for a Trek XI parody?)

That...is a damn good idea. :techman:

I said in one of my TV ratings threads that FOX should bring the show back so I was half right ;) A great move am sure by Comedy Central.

Sweet Zombie Jesus!

That's great news.

I'm glad they're going back to episodic TV.

:techman:

It became increasingly obvious with the four movies (the last two in particular) that Futurama worked best as a half-hour TV programme. Not my personal all-time favourite show, but it'll be good to have it back!

In the Variety article, Groening states that he got ideas after seeing the new Trek film...perhaps an alternate timeline/universe is in the works???

From the Variety article:

Writing has already begun on the show; Groening said he was inspired by the "Star Trek" movie this summer enough that the updated "Futurama" may take a similar tact to explain the launch of this run.
