I like that the Marvel monthly series fills the gap between TMP and WoK!

I think "fills" overstates it, since there were only a handful of issues and it's a gap of around a decade, give or take. But yeah, it was one of the few sources of stories set in between TMP and TWOK, since most of the novels were 5-year mission or sometimes Enterprise-A era, and the DC series was post--TWOK.

Gold Key #56 "No Time Like the Past" is one of the better ones I've read in the series. The Guardian worked a little differently than on the series, but there were none of the face-palming moments that most of the issues had, and the characters generally acted like themselves.

Like the opening scene of The Phantom of the Opera musical, #56 may spark an interest in actual history with its references to Hannibal, Romans, and war elephants.

Is that also from The Haunting of Thallus? I don't remember that one.

Scotty's one-time lover, Andrea Manning, created a psychological manifestation of the creature to attack Spock. Escalating the psychokinesis attack, she created a larger version of Nessie in space to assault the Enterprise. [TOS comic: "... Like a Woman Scorned!"]
