Funniest comedies ever?

Kind Hearts and Coronets has been mentioned already (albeit in passing) but I must nod at it again. Easily the funniest of the Ealing comedies. I also love Captain's Holiday, which admittedly was not an Ealing film but does feature Alec Guinness.

More recently, I'll give the nod to Thank You For Smoking. That was a hilarious movie.

"I shot an arrow in the air, she fell to earth in Berkeley Square"

:guffaw:
Priceless. :)

"It is so difficult to make a neat job of killing people with whom one is not on friendly terms."

The film is the perfect unison of Edwardian English elegance and black comedy as far as I'm concerned.

Just wanted to thank everyone for all of the great responses. Thanks to you all, I've got a truckload of new flicks to see and laughs to have. :techman:

Blue Brothers: "We're on a mission from God."

Opps How could I forget that one:o
also
Jake [to Sister Mary Stigmata] "Five grand? No problem, we'll have it for you in the morning. Let's go, Elwood. "
Sister Mary Stigmata:"No, no! I will not take your filthy stolen money!
Jake: Well then... I guess you're really up Shit Creek. "
[Sister Mary Stigmata hits Jake Blues with a ruler for using that kind of language]
Sister Mary Stigmata:" I beg your pardon, what did you say? "
Jake" I offered to help you... You refused to take our money. Then I said: I guess you're really up Shit Creek."
[Sister Mary Stigmata hits Jake Blues with the ruler again]
Elwood " Christ, Jake. Take it easy man."
[Sister Mary Stigmata hits Elwood Blues]
Jake: "Oh shit!"

Elwood: "Jesus Christ!"

The Lady Eve is a wonderful film from yesteryear that not only holds up, but is still very, very funny.

Blazing Saddles is probably my favorite Mel Brooks comedy.

Duck Soup is my favorite Marx Brothers movie.

And for Woody Allen, I have to go with Sleeper, although Bananas is pretty strong as well.

And I'll make a shout-out for the completely over-indulgent, yet quite wonderful film by Robert Meyer Burnett, Free Enterprise.

Most have been mentioned.. here are some of mine

The Don Camillo and Peppone series.. 1950s Italy and the battle between the communist mayor and the conservative catholic priest in a small village
Hilarious to no end

To Wong Foo.. Wesely Snipes, Patrick Swayze and John Leguizamo as Drag Queens stranded in some godforsaken desert place.
You've GOT to see Wesley play a Drag Queen! :guffaw:

Maverick.. awesome ensemble cast with Jodie Foster, Mel Gibson and James Garner (the original Maverick from the 60s TV show). Who knew Foster could be so funny?
