Funeral for a friend

I dont care what SPOCK says or what JJ says...oldTREK is dead, and we are in a new era. I don't believe in alternate timelines...oldTREK (from TOS to VOY) is dead forever..

If it is dead forever, which non-REGULAR character will you miss the most. Meaning, if the new timeline totally goes a new way and this character never would have existed now...it would devastate you the most?

Rob

As long as it's there, it isn't dead.

In your mind it is there. But the only ones who will remember are fans of the oldtime line. No new fan is going to care about a timeline that, for them, 40 years of screwing up is far to massive to ever appreciate.

And if you are a new fan reading this? Do your self a favor and dont even attempt to learn it all. you'll find that the continuity that some TREK fans brag about is so screwed up with holes, you'd drowned if you thought you could use it to stop a rainstorm...

So....I will miss Captain Sisko the most. I liked him and I thought, of all the captain, he was the most I could identify with, being a parent myself...

Rob

Jeez, do you really think Abrams is capable of "killing" original Trek? Trek has been with us for more than 40 years, and it became iconic and a part of pop culture long before Mr. Real-Awesome-Large-Scale-Mind-Blowing arrived on the scene. Different timelines, mirror universes, time travel, etc. have always been part of scifi and of Trek. Now we have The Abrams Timeline, so what? :wtf:

I say anyone who feels this way should write a fanfiction story where OldSpock hires a ship, flies around a star, goes back in time, and strangles Nero in his crib.

And then never, ever go see another new Star Trek film of tv show ever again.

Problem solved.

As far as the original question, I'd miss the left leg of Spock's wang the most.

Yeah...I'm not subsribing to the "my star trek is dead" line of thinking...my star trek is alive and well...thank you!

Besides I think this movie is going to garner some new fans for our beloved series... it's going to breath new life into "our star trek"....!!!

And one other thing...RobScorp you're giving this JJ guy waaaaaaaay too much credit claiming he's killing our Trek....now get a hold of yourself man!

Far from it...JJ is saving our TREK by killing off the non-sense of what became of old-trek. By doing what he has done, he has paved the way to tell new stories not beholden to TREK's over-weight continuity...I say BRAVO...

Yes he's paving the way for new stories...agreed. I don't think TOS was over-weight...besides a little in the 3rd season but Shatner was under pressure LOL LOL LOL....

I'm just talking about TOS not all the other series since I haven't seen them....so this nonsense of old Trek what are you referring to ENT?

I love DS9...I like TNG. But I don't care what we fans think or don't think because this movie is not or ever was aimed at us.

Shatner has been right about this, as has Nimoy, and even Takie has hinted at it. Somewhere along the way, TNG-DS9, Trek became less fun and more about wars and moral stories. TOS managed to do both and remain fun. Now, you may not agree...thats fine. But I am not interested in your opinon, or mine...I am interested in my teenaged son's and my teenaged daughter's. They are the target and...guess what...IT hit the target. now they want to know everything I know about Star Trek...

OK they are the target...are you telling me something that I don't know? They are ALWAYS the target demographic even though we're the ones who have the money to spend...but anyhoo I can tell you my teenage niece (19) and her friends were not interested in Star Trek and they've made fun of me. I asked her to go w/ me to see the new one and she wasn't interested...although it did take her about a minute to reject me...so that was hopeful and she may just come around....

My friends teenage son (19) refused to go to the movie even though we got him a ticket...he said "I'm not into Star Trek"...I tried to convince him that he would like it but he wouldn't budge. I told him ...yeah you'll end up seeing this anyway!!! Last Sat I was over there and we were watching Trek...he came in at the last of doomsday and was getting into it...

I saw a lot of young men in the theater and they weren't with their parents...actually I saw a great cross section of ages and races present so in my eyes and paramounts too....... this star trek is for everybody...of all ages...the circus is so why the fuck can't this movie be :p

Robert, you have quite a bee in your little bonnet on this issue, haven't you? You could be right, but I wouldn't bet on it. Of course there will be people who only like the new Trek, just as there were people who only liked TNG etc. etc. etc....but as to whether they will be the vast majority or not? I don't know. And neither do you. So let's just wait and see. Nuthin' we can do about it, whichever way it goes.

And episodes like Visitor, End Game, Yesterday's Enterprise, City on the Edge of Forever, which all showed alternate futures didn't happen either.

Maybe this trek will make youngsters seek out the older shows, if not, it's too bad.. from my experience more serious drama tends to last longer.. sure new trek is all guzzied up...looks, sounds and tastes great.. like chinese food.. it leaves you a bit empty... we'll see if this vision of trek has the legs to stand the test of time, but I would'nt bet on it..

Yeah god forbid a form of entertainment tries to teach that War is bad. And all those icky morality plays.. lets just show characters bangin..shootin and being badass.. just how shallow are you.

Given your logic, Star Trek has been dead for several years and JJ didn't go anything at all.

I would miss The Doctor the most. Fortunately he lives on in the alternate timeline of Stargate.

All of them are right where they always were, in the old episodes and movies. Since Paramount hasn't made an episode of TOS in forty years nor a TOS-based movie in seventeen, your whole premise really is a non-starter - the old version of the 23rd century has been effectively dead since 1992 at the latest.
