Fuel in the 23th century: a theory

NCC-1967

Lieutenant
Red Shirt
Some of you have ranted about the 'vette sequence and it's improbability, due to an apparent lack of fuel in the 23th century.
Looks like a plothole, but here's a few theories that might work:
the United Federation of Planets has charted and explored thousands of worlds... maybe, just maybe, a few of them have fossil fuels.
Or maybe a civilization capable of FTL travel has somehow invented or discovered a substitute for oil...
Or Uncle Abuse has replaced the Chevy's V8 for something a bit more advanced...

... which are all good and valid theories. But I doubt that we will see that explained at all. At least, that's what I hope. :)

While not a bad theory, I do have to ask: People are actually obsessing about this? Hoo-Lee Shit.

I'm just waiting for the thread about the "whurring noise" Kirk's bike mades as he drives past the camera.

We've had everything else.

"WHAT IS THAT LITTLE SPECK OF DIRT... Oh, it's dirt... COULD BE BE A SHIP?"

I am a Star Trek fan, I have been since 1975 when I was 12, but the things some fans obsess over makes me scratch my head in wonder. I am not a Star Trek Fundamentalist the type of fan who looks on these issues with almost religious zeal.

23th century? I think you meant to say 23rd. Oh well, I am thankful you didn't stick a zero in front of it. That would have been too Abrams-esque.

Sorry about that.
You see, english is not my native language, and sometimes it shows, silly me...

That's cool. I was only being a dick because I'm bored anyway. But I am truly glad you didn't start the number off with a zero. That would have been uncool. My childhood would have been raped.

What's this about a 'lack of fuel'?

In any case, if Uncle Frank took the time to restore an old 'vette like that, I'm sure he managed to find some gas to power it.

Assuming, of course, that it *is* gas. Remember that bit on B5 where Garibaldi and Lennier restore an old motorcycle? Lennier installs a Minbari power source to run it. Maybe Frank does something like that.

You're after the wrong guy, believe me. I'm a ST fan since 1978, and I'm NOT a fundamentalist! Even if I wanted, I could never be one. I lack the knowledge these guys have, for starters...
I just started a thread on a subject I found interesting, what's so wrong about that?
And speaking of fundamentalists, what do you call the guys who wrote all those "there's no fuel in the 23d century! This movie is a failure" posts?

I have a feeling mankind outgrows its need for fossil fuels and finds other primary fuel sources long before we run out of oil. So while there may not be a gas station on every corner in Kirk's time, fossil fuels may still be around for the odd machine that still uses it. And who knows, by then, technology probably exists to have the fuel burn clean.

This is Iowa, after all. It could be running on ethanol made from corn.

Nowadays, regular is unleaded. But anyway, I hope we're not wasting some other planet's resources for a hobby like gas-powered vehicles.
