FTL: Faster Than Light

I thought you guys would appreciate a Starship-based Rogue-like... which is really a genre I don't think I've ever heard of before.

Faster Than Light.

Trailer: http://vimeo.com/47066972

You basically control a Starship and you are trying to make it through the galaxy in order to defeat the the rebels. But rather than be a space simulator, you micromanage your crew and your ship's systems via an overhead interface.

There's something about it that is highly addictive. I mean, it's not like this is an entirely new concept - even ST:O has Starship management after all - but it's just presented in such a simple manner that you can just focus all your attention on the micromanaging instead of being distracted by everything else.

The fact that it's a rogue-like - meaning you can't save and that everything is randomized every time you play - just makes it infinitely replayable as well.

And hey, it's only 9 bucks!

You can save the game when you quit, so you can actually take a break or leave the game if you want. But that's all they give you.

Got the game based on TB's review of it.

Hardly the "greatest game ever" but it's not a bad little distraction.

Been watching a couple of playthroughs on Youtube, and it looks pretty good. Although a graphics upgrade might not be amiss.

Looking at the ship layouts reminds me so much of the shipboard maps from the old Traveller RPG.

Quite an entertaining distraction, but oh boy you will die, or restart often if you don't get the right goodies within a reasonable amount of time.

Yeah, that's the "joy" of a rogue-like.

You eventually get to the point when you basically resign the game early on because you know you can't win.

I'm a console gamer and I've heard a lot of good things about this one. Thinking about learning to play on PC to give it a shot!

Silly question but I can't remember the last time I got a PC game (though I've been tempted a few times lately). GOG is DRM free, right? If you buy it on Steam are you tied to the client?

It's really easy to play since it's mostly menu driven and you can pause at any time. It's too bad there isn't a demo though.

If you buy from the developer for the same price, you get both DRM free copies (for PC, Mac and Linux if you are crazy) and a Steam key.

GOG is also DRM free, but I don't know if they have started doing Mac versions of their games.

That sounds perfect! When I looked at the link I missed the stuff at the top somehow and only saw that it was now available on GOG and Steam.

I'm not a fan of roguelikes, but this does look interesting. I'm sure I'll pick it up at some point in the near future.
