From the Earth to the Moon

Recently watched The Right Stuff and found it a vastly under-rated movie. I thought it was going to be long and drawn-out but it was filled with funny scenes and engaging characters. I was also amazed at the how well the miniature work blended with the archival footage. The show really gave a big thrilling feeling to the early days of the space race. (Something Enterprise was trying to do.)

Anyway, watched the first episode of From the Earth to the Moon which picks up right where The Right Stuff ends. Don't remember much discussion on this board about that Tom Hanks miniseries.

Do y'all give it an enthusiastic thumbs up? Should I keep on watching?

Hope I posted this in the right forum!

Keep watching. It's a hell of a show. Also, if you can find it, get the book the series is based on. It's called A Man in the Moon, by Andrew Chaikin.

Well, this is just my opinion, but I think it was fantastic. I don't remember reading much in the way of negative opinions of this miniseries, other than recasting from Apollo 13 (also a Tom Hanks project). Other than that, which doesn't really count, pretty much across the board positive.

I say go with it. Keep watching. If you like it, give the Apollo 13 movie a shot as well. :bolian:

It is a great series. I would probably like to own it on DVD if I had the chance. I know that I could find something interesting everytime I would watch it.

Great mini-series. My favorite episodes were...

  • "Spider" (about the design and construction of the LM)
  • "That's all there is" (about Alan Bean and Apollo 12)
  • "Galileo was right" (about training the astronauts for scientific missions and Apollo 15)

Great series. I found it hard at times to keep track of all the characters as the casting sometimes changes from episode to episode, but all in all a great show.

One of the best and simply most awe-inspiring mini series ever made. I love it and rewatch at least once a year.

Wasn't Paul McCrane a total laugh riot? What a character Pete Conrad was.

And now I don't even think Kids in the Hall when somebody mentions Dave Foley...he will always be Al Bean in my mind.

Sad note, though: Another astronaut has recently died - Frank Borman, commander of Apollo 8 and Gemini 7. :(

It's a fantastic show that gets better and better with each episode.

For me it was a great series with the exception of the final episode. I found it a let down after all the other great episodes.

Really? I thought the last episode was the best of the series, but I'm equally as interested in filmmaking as I am in the space program, so I can understand why people wouldn't like it. Still, I think it offers a fascinating look at the sadness that the end of Apollo brought.

Bought the DVD set for my roomie for Christmas and we both love it! Hell I don't think I've ever read a negative review.

Will probably keep it handy to rewatch whenever I get in one of my 'humanity is just no damn good!' kinds of moods. It shows what we're capable of when we have a goal. I just wonder if there'll ever again be anything like the Apollo project.

If you find negative reviews, it'll probably come from the Coast to Coast AM nutjobs who think everything about the space program was faked because the Van Allen Belt can't be passed through, that Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden were CIA operatives,
that Skull & Bones and Majestic 12 are masterminding the North American Union, etc.
