When rumours and plot details started dribbling in about the new film months ago my first thoughts were very skeptical. Time travel? Again?? Romulans? Weren't they the villains last time? And didn't that film tank? And another prequel after a prequel series that was cancelled due to poor ratings.
To me at first glance it seemed like history repeating itself. Let's face it, the time travel, go back in tot he past to kill/save the future is Trek cliche 1a in the Trek book of plot cliches. My thought was, "wow, didn't everybody want B&B ousted so that we'd avoid these tired old plot threads and ideas?? If this was the plot under those two the fans would be all over this and not in a good way". It seemed like new CEO, same old company policies.
But, as time has gone on and more details surface and the longing for new Trek intensifies I can't help but find myself getting caught up in the excitement.
The pictures of the crew and the Kelvin and the new bridge, to my eyes, look very exciting and they definately grab the eye. Some may disagree, but I certainly liked what I saw. In fact I almost wish they had gone more different and more stranger with the look. But what we have leaves me with hope.
And what has really brought me around is what brought me to Trek in the first place. the concept of humans, working together, as explorers in space. It's a concept worth fighting for and a story worth telling. Even after 700 hours of produced Trek. If this movie can tell a good story with the aforementioned principles, then that's enough for me.
And to quote Warp 11: "I gots two words for you my friend. Leonard Nimoy!"
