From skepticism to enthusiasm.

cynical dreamer

When rumours and plot details started dribbling in about the new film months ago my first thoughts were very skeptical. Time travel? Again?? Romulans? Weren't they the villains last time? And didn't that film tank? And another prequel after a prequel series that was cancelled due to poor ratings.

To me at first glance it seemed like history repeating itself. Let's face it, the time travel, go back in tot he past to kill/save the future is Trek cliche 1a in the Trek book of plot cliches. My thought was, "wow, didn't everybody want B&B ousted so that we'd avoid these tired old plot threads and ideas?? If this was the plot under those two the fans would be all over this and not in a good way". It seemed like new CEO, same old company policies.

But, as time has gone on and more details surface and the longing for new Trek intensifies I can't help but find myself getting caught up in the excitement.

The pictures of the crew and the Kelvin and the new bridge, to my eyes, look very exciting and they definately grab the eye. Some may disagree, but I certainly liked what I saw. In fact I almost wish they had gone more different and more stranger with the look. But what we have leaves me with hope.

And what has really brought me around is what brought me to Trek in the first place. the concept of humans, working together, as explorers in space. It's a concept worth fighting for and a story worth telling. Even after 700 hours of produced Trek. If this movie can tell a good story with the aforementioned principles, then that's enough for me.

And to quote Warp 11: "I gots two words for you my friend. Leonard Nimoy!"

Very well put.

I still have some misgivings, I really with they'd gone with a full post-Nemesis movie with a new crew. I feel like they could've gone back to the TOS feel without actually going back to TOS, but I think the fact that you have Kirk, Spock and Bones again gives them financial reason to do it.

But yeah, I agree. This movie, I think, is going to be at least better than half of the Trek movies out there, which I would be happy with.

My only complaint is the visual changes.

We'll see just how different the bridge turns out to be, but I've read the phasers look more like six shooters than the ones we knew from TOS.

Hey, the uniforms are fairly familiar. At least that's something.

As for the story, I've got no complaints at all, and think the return of the original characters is great.

Well, I intend to remain unflinchingly optimistic until May. If the movie sucks, I'll have the rest of my life to hate it. So, I might as well enjoy it to the fullest for the next 7 months or so.

What we've heard so far sounds like the Terminator, and even that was a ripped off concept.

The Romulans are a long-neglected but potentially great antagonist. They just need the proper development they have never gotten.

The recasting appears solid, overall.

The redesign of the sets look like the capture the fun spirit of TOS without evoking the 60s. The aesthetics look distinctive to Star Trek and don't feel like the aesthetics of every other frakkin space series or movie out there.

There's nothing wrong with time travel as a premise. It's just hard to pull off well and it's bungled so often that people get cynical.

Nothing I've heard to date makes me seriously worried about the quality of this film. If the logic of the time travel involves a bit of hand-waving, so be it. It's just one movie. There will be others, then back to TV. This is just the very start.

Ditto.

I thought "wow, what a horrible idea!"

Then I saw Quinto cast. And THEN I learned that the old Star Trek production team had nothing to do with it - and instead, infact, a successful Hollywood person was in charge. Then I was onboard! :techman:

What he said!

Probably the healthiest attitude to have.

If I've been and remain skeptical over anything about this movie, it's that they may have bitten off more than they can chew in the story. That it will be convoluted. There seems to be a lot going on, with jumps all over the place, and everyone, and everything, may be spread too thin to make it a wholly satisfying movie. Action and adventure may give way to merely a frantic pace.

But the pretty good buzz so far keeps those thoughts in the back of my mind.

Haven't seen much of the show LOST, have you?

That program is as popular as all get out, it was co-created by JJ, and you've just described a good many of its episodes.

Actually, no, I don't watch Lost. My wife watched it for a while, but it got kinda crazy for her. I'm familiar with Abrams' story-telling style. That said, my only worry has still been an overly-ambitious story. Trying to do too much. Putting too much in. I suppose I need something about the movie to worry about, and that's it. In all, I'm very psyched about the whole thing.
