Fritz Lang's Metropolis... Who else plans on getting it?

Reminds me that I got a copy free with a newspaper a few years back, still haven't sat down to watch it.

Wow. I'm amazed you haven't watched it yet.

And I just realised November will be a good month for DVDs. I'll be picking up this newest version of Metropolis and I just noticed that Doctor Who's Revenge of the Cybermen is also out in November which will complete Tom Baker's first season for me.

The Milwaukee Film Festival is showing this a couple times this week. Once at the Oriental Theatre with a live orchestra....would love to see that but it conflicts with my night work schedule. But Marcus North Shore in Mequon is showing it at noon on Friday and I will definitely be going.

Turner Classic Movies is showing the newly restored version of Metropolis on November 7 at 8 PM Eastern. It'll be followed by a documentary on how the new footage was found and digitally restored.

It's going into my Netflix queue. I've heard about this movie for years and due to its massive 'incomplete' stigma I've avoided it. Now that it's 95% complete I'm going to give it a shot. Be curious to know if the remaining few minutes of footage contain anything that might alter what we have now.

Nomad beat me to it. I just saw the commercial for this on TCM today. Can't wait. :mallory:

The new release is what finally made me decide to go blu-ray and I pre-ordered it.

Mind you, it doesn't come out till Nov.14, and I have now bought a few other blu-ray discs, so it won't be my "first".

I've seen the trailer, it's a shame they couldn't do more with the scratched up 16mm bits. Though, if a 16mm copy can be found, maybe there's another full copy out there somewhere in whatever size/format it was originally shown in.

I'm definitely getting the Blu-Ray. But ... I must have jumped a time track or something because I shelled out 30 clams about 3 years ago for a Kino release that was promoted as being "the final restoration". So while Metropolis has always been on my priority list for "voluntary double-dipping" in regards to trading up to Blu-Ray versions, I'll have to find out what happened for them to suddenly find another bunch of footage for restoration. (Considering the comments regarding "there's no more to be found" on the last edition, this actually gives one hope that maybe more lost Doctor Who or Avengers episodes might turn up! ;) )

TCM is one of the main reasons I have cable, and once again they come through. :techman:

A previously-unknown copy was found in Argentina IIRC... most of the new footage is in bad shape but they've done what they can.

As far as they knew, it was the "final" one. It's one of those cases where you can't expect to ever find more footage.

Nothing like what Lucas has done to us, multiple times, or the potential "more deleted scenes" version of LOTR I've heard mention of.

It's such a classic. For anyone who hasn't seen it yet, now's the time.

I saw it in the theater when it came to town with the Alloy Orchestra performing the music (their own score, not the original 1927 sheet music). To be honest, I actually prefer their score over the original. Kino isn't including the Alloy score on the DVD, though the Alloy Orchestra is selling their score on CD and it's timed exactly to the film so you could mute it and have the CD playing while watching the DVD or BluRay.

Like Jinx-01, the audience I saw it with laughed at parts that weren't supposed to be funny  but I guess that's what you get seeing things live sometimes.

Is the version TCM is showing the new one? On their site they don't really specify, but they link to a DVD which is the 2002 version.

Oh and regarding some people asking about the little bit of still missing material, there were only two major scenes I recall that were missing and they were summarized on screen in titles. The story is complete though couple of the visuals are missing. It's about as near to complete as we'll probably ever get though.

According to the commercial I saw, they will be showing the newest version with the recently recovered scenes.

I'll definitely be picking it up on Blu-Ray. I've been looking forward to it for awhile. My only hesitation on pre-ordering it was the soundtrack. (I didn't know which restoration had the pop soundtrack, just that I wanted to avoid it :p)

It's November 22nd for the UK DVD/BR release of the new restored version. I won't be buying it.

But only cos I got a copy from the distributor last week to review.... Reckon I'll watch it tomorrow or Thursday.
