My point was, space travel is too dangerous to just set the auto-pilot and leave the bridge. It's also too dangerous to just leave Crewman Snuffy** alone at the helm to keep things safe. Would you want the pilots on a trans-ocean flight to hand the flight deck over to a stewardess so they can nap out halfway over the Pacific? No, of course not. You'd want a relief pilot, someone who may not have as much experience but is fully qualified to handle any emergency situation.
As long as you've got that, I guess it doesn't matter what his job title is, does it?
