Here is a smattering of my favourite freeware:

Audiograbber - Looks a bit rough around the edges but is pretty much the best CD ripper I've ever used.

CCleaner - Spiffy system/registry cleanup program. Very useful.

DVD Slideshow GUI - This is actually a collection of several programs, each of which plays a part in creating slideshow DVDs which will playback on pretty much any standalone DVD player, even older ones.

Glitch - VST plugin for DAW software. The name conveys some idea of the sorts of sounds which can be eked from it.

Revo Uninstaller - Kickass uninstaller with full control throughout an uninstallation (down to the identification and removal of registry files).

Universal Extractor - Kickass package extractor, compatible with just about any common compressed filetype. The best part is that it just creates a new folder with the same name and it's done - no fooling around with vague context menus and such.

VirtualBox - Virtualisation software. Since you're digging freeware, you might as well go the whole hog and try out some of the numerous free Linux distros. Also functions as a sandbox for testing suspicious websites and such.

Has anyone else heard of this? It's a program for your computer that's designed to change the color temperature of your display based on whether it's day or night. I've been using it for a little under a week now and I love it. It's really jarring to use it for an hour or two at night and then disable it.

Anyway, I recommend people check it out at least!

If anyone os imterested in cataloging their book colelction There is a good freeware database for you called BookDB2.

Its fields include

Title
Secondary Title
Author (2 fields - and you can tick authors as being editirs)
Book cost
Language
Fiction/non Fiction
Publication details i.e publisher, year, edition, no of pages
Call number
Type of medium i,e paperback, hardback, references, Comic. Magazine, CD/DVD etc

It also allows you to assign categories and keep track of borrowings.

It has a Description and a Location field.

In a later edition a Contents field will be added.

My only real complaint is there is no Notes or Comdition field but I guess that could be included under description.

eLibrary is a simple, basic one that I use, though it has a few more features than BookDB2.

Just got portable GIMP tonight on my laptop, haven't uploaded it yet. Got it from sourceforge.net.

Anyone else have it on their computer? Is it safe to use on a laptop?

Also got regular GIMP on it as well, haven't uploaded it either.

It's a little tricky to use at first, but once you get the hang of it, it's pretty fun . Goes well with Corel Paintshop Pro X4, which is the version I'm using. The newest version (X5) has an abrviewer, but from what I've read about it so far, it's still too unstable to even consider buying at this point. So this is a pretty good alternative.
