Freemasonry

If you are a Mason or have an understanding of Freemasonry, I'd like to talk to you. I am thinking of becoming a Mason, but I have had a few friends communicate thier reservations to me.

There was a similar thread about this not too long ago. Use the search to find the other thread. It had 90 something posts in it, so it should have some info. Or just travel back in the Misc thread and you'll come across it. Search for freemason in the title, (I think it was that)

Nothing personal (and yes, I have heard about the Taxil hoax) but I didn't pledge a frat when I was in college, I will not join a union at work, and I wouldn't become a Mason either.

Being part of any formal, organized group entails obligations, which I refuse to give. The only group I particularly want to be part of is this. And all you have to do there is show up for games. :techman:

^ The avatar should have been a giveaway. ;)

lol, indeed. For some reason I just hadn't noticed him before.

^ Bleecher Creatures; that's cool. If only I would have gotten involved with sports in some fashion as a child, maybe I'd be a bit more in touch; as it is, I don't even know how to play... so when I watch a ball game I get about as much out of it as watching an encripted string of numbers. Well, anyway... not to break the topic... :)

Greetings, Bro. Josh! Yes, there are several of us here. I've been contacted by others over PM in the past years - not sure if they're still around.

Bro. A.R., good to see you again. :)

Be prepared for everyone who reads The Lost Symbol to be instant authorities of false assumptions and conspiracy theories.

I've got nothing bad to say about the Masons. They provided me with a full scholarship for college, tuition and living expenses. My life was made better by it and I really and truly appreciate it. I didn't even have any affiliation to them (that I know of) - just sent in an application. It was very unexpected, in a good way.

Yes, many Grand Lodges have started putting together separate PR wings to handle the influx of questions and disinformation. I finally finished the book a week ago and, while there are some dead-on statements made about the philosophy and history of the fraternity, there are equally misleading and complete falsehoods, particularly in the first chapter with the lead antagonist's "initiation" - a complete mish-mash of all three Blue Lodge degrees and a dash of Royal Arch and Knights Templar stuff, repackaged and called the 33rd Degree. I'm not a 33rd, but I know a lot of those guys in my local Valley (Scottish Rite equivalent to a "Lodge" in Blue Lodge Masonry, "Chapter" in Royal Arch Masonry (also known as "Red Lodge"), "Commandery" for the Knights Templar, etc.), and while they have all obligated themselves to not reveal what's in it, they certainly can say what is NOT in the degree ritual, and that ain't it (they explained while all the time laughing)!

Spot's Meow: I'm glad your scholarship request was successful. Many Lodges support scholarship activities as a part of regular community service, along with blood drives, child ID programs and other local philanthropies.
