Freeform orders Marvel's Cloak and Dagger series

Glad to hear that. Feels like this has been in development forever, so I'm glad to see it's getting some positive buzz.

I still don't find the lead actors at all engaging, at least not in these small doses. I guess I'll give the show a try, though. At least it's on cable instead of some streaming service. It's getting rarer to be able to actually watch one of these shows without subscribing to something.

The logistics of that seem difficult. My preference would be to have them cross over on Hulu for Runaways season two to recreate the time Cloak and Dagger appeared in the comics (admittedly, the dynamic would probably be different). It would also serve as free advertising for Freeform. But all of that is easier said than done and isn't likely next year.

The more recent footage makes the show look more promising.

I know there are some here who believe that YA means irredeemably childish

If so, they've probably never actually read any. It's called "Young Adult" for a reason -- because it's aimed at teens and preteens who look forward to becoming adults and are eager to explore adult ideas. Anything written to be childish would be of no interest to that demographic.

I really liked this premiere episode. It was pretty dark, but I thought they did a good job of being realistic for the issues they were dealing with and didn't shy away from mature themes.

Are we going to review here or have a separate spoiler thread?

It's better than I expected from the previews and trailers. I find the male lead a bit bland at times, but otherwise it's okay. The cast includes three women I remember fondly from past shows -- Gloria Reuben (who was Sabrina on the 1990 The Flash) as Tyrone's mother, Andrea Roth (Diana from RoboCop: The Series) as Tandy's mother, and introduced in episode 2 as the oddly silent police detective, Emma Lahana of Power Rangers Dino Thunder.

There's one subtle link I noticed to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, one that this article confirms was intentional. Tyrone's power seems to be connected to the Darkforce, an extradimensional phenomenon featured several times on Agents of SHIELD. We know from Agent Carter that Isodyne Energy investigated the Darkforce under the name Zero Matter, and we know from AoS that Roxxon later acquired Isodyne. And it was a Roxxon experiment whose explosion gave Tyrone and Tandy their powers. So it's all connected.

So far Cloak comes off as a more powerful version of Nightcrawler only without the "BAMF" and stuff. Anyone think so?

Teleportation is part of his power. The ability for things to phase through him is probably just as significant. The question is whether he'll be able to absorb people like the comics or they're just going with the visions of people's greatest fears thing.

His teleporting has pretty good range, he can jump entire city lengths and doesn't need to see where he goes to go there. And Dagger's power is that she can create weapons out of light...meaning she's never unarmed.

And presumably can produce a blinding light as well. (At one point, her hand is glowing so brightly that Tyrone has to avert his eyes, allowing her to escape.)

One oddity when it comes to the visions. Tyrone's "victims" actually seem to experience some sort of disorientation or weakness afterwards, whereas Tandy's mom and boyfriend seemed unaffected and oblivious to what just happened.

Well, he's showing them/seeing their worst fears while she sees their hopes and dreams...makes a spiritual sort of sense that people exposed to Tyrone would feel worse after.

There was that guy he touched in episode 1 who seemed drained and hurt by the contact as well, though there was no vision there that I recall. I think Tyrone may have some kind of life-energy draining touch independent of the visions. It makes sense, in a comic-booky way -- Tandy emits energy, so it follows that Tyrone would absorb it.

This rings true to his comic powers. Per Wikipedia:
People enveloped by Cloak's darkness feel numbing cold and experience terrifying visions of their own greatest fears and nightmares. Overlong exposure to the darkness can drive people insane.
Also:
Cloak feels a constant hunger which can only be assuaged by feeding either on light projected by Dagger or on light consumed from victims dispatched to the dimension of darkness.
