On the other hand, their origin involved the bad guys trying to invent a synthetic heroin for the drug trade. Given the ongoing Heroin (and especially Fentanyl) crisis, this feels particularly relevant to me.
I've recently been re-reading their original stories and while I think there's a lot of flaws, the origin as explained in Cloak and Dagger #4 seems to work for me. Tyrone was a fairly successful student and basketball star. However, he had a terrible stutter. When his friend was suspected of stealing something, he was unable to speak up to explain what was going on and the police shot his friend. Tandy lived a fairly privileged life but resented her step-father and the whole thing and decided to run away. I think quite a lot of that origin can explore current issues of class, race, police brutality, and drug use (particularly among teenagers). I'm not saying I wouldn't change a lot, but there's also a lot I would keep.
