Freeform orders Marvel's Cloak and Dagger series

The only one of the network's current shows I've checked out was Stitchers, which was one of the dumbest shows I've ever seen. But it's had a few notable shows in the past, under its other names. As The Family Channel, it aired the excellent The Legend of Prince Valiant animated series in the early '90s -- absolutely terrible animation, but really smart, older-skewing writing and an excellent voice cast and music. As ABC Family, it aired four seasons of Power Rangers and the superlative but sadly short-lived The Middleman. And... that's about it, as far as my own experience goes. I heard good things about Kyle XY while it was on, but never got around to trying it.
I enjoyed Kyle XY back when it originally aired, it wasn't perfect by any means but there was still a lot to like. It was my first exposure to Jaime Alexander, so that's a big plus for me.

There are a lot of Cloak and Dagger fans out there? Just curious... I've got the impression that they had their peek in popularity in the 80's...

According to Wikipedia, in the last years they were just guests in other stories (X-Mex??? Mr. Negative henchmen???) .
Honestly, I think they're due for a comeback (ideally a retelling of their origin story). The issues that drove the original story are just as timely with the Heroin epidemic, race/class conflicts, etc.

The trailer looked like a Freeform show, but it looked like it wasn't going to shy away from these elements and it also looked like it wasn't going to ignore the comic book-y elements. Given the channel, the trailer certainly exceeded my expectations.

I want to be able to like this show. That clip doesn't do much to inspire. Plus, I need their powers to be derived from an experiment by evildoers. Here it implies the power is just manifesting by itself.
Need more.

The trailer from way back when suggested they might be going with the Ultimate version of their origin story. I liked this, but there's a lot we don't know.

Yeah, the original version of their origin, runaways being kidnapped and hogtied and forcibly injected with mutated heroin, might have been a hard sell in 2018. And, of course, the original trailer inferred that Roxxon oil would have something to do with the story, so there are your evildoers.

Smart going, Tyrone. Yelling at her across the field, instead of just walking up to her first.

Like the trailer, the show feels rather meh. I'll wait for the reviews.

On the other hand, their origin involved the bad guys trying to invent a synthetic heroin for the drug trade. Given the ongoing Heroin (and especially Fentanyl) crisis, this feels particularly relevant to me.

I've recently been re-reading their original stories and while I think there's a lot of flaws, the origin as explained in Cloak and Dagger #4 seems to work for me. Tyrone was a fairly successful student and basketball star. However, he had a terrible stutter. When his friend was suspected of stealing something, he was unable to speak up to explain what was going on and the police shot his friend. Tandy lived a fairly privileged life but resented her step-father and the whole thing and decided to run away. I think quite a lot of that origin can explore current issues of class, race, police brutality, and drug use (particularly among teenagers). I'm not saying I wouldn't change a lot, but there's also a lot I would keep.

I think here they've inverted it, now Tyrone is the upper-class boy and Tandy is the street kid.

^ Whoa, whoa, cloak that dagger...

j/k

That does seem quite relevant, actually. Shame they didn't seem to go that direction.

I actually own all the Cloak and Dagger series (well, the old ones at least way out of touch with the current scene), I should go dig them out.

I don't think they've had many comics recently.

I don't think we know enough about where we're going to know exactly what they'll do and what they'll change.

They're saying some nice stuff, hopefully the actual show will give us what they're saying it will.
