I read an interview with the producers of Westworld where they said it is much harder to do these kinds of surprises now than it used to be because of the internet. There is basically a hive mind watching your show who are constantly working together to process scenes and examine clues. So in this day and age you just try to make the journey as satisfying as possible even if your audience has worked out the answers.I wasn't surprised about anything this episode...
Fact is you just can't telegraph things as strongly as the previous Discovery writers did and still expect people to be surprised.
