Hopefully they'll do it a fair way into the season, so it actually feels like a meaningful break from the characters we have come to know.
The concept itself doesn't interest me - DS9 ran it into the ground, and the short-story compilations were generally awful - but Enterprise showed it can be made interesting with good writing at least.

Oh come on, you knew they were going to do one. Every other Trek series has, so why not this?
It would be really weird to do that so quickly, particularly when characters aren't yet established.
TNG and VOY didn't.
VOY came close... hell even TNG did with Parallels.

Could have something to do with the new (science) engine/warp tech they're working on with the Discovery. Maybe shoots them into the Mirrorverse?
where? What we have been told is its 13-15 linked episodes in an arc, like Game of Thrones and most other modern streaming dramas.
