Fox working to bring X-Men to TV

Earlier this month, Fox entertainment chairmen Gary Newman and Dana Walden told reporters at the Television Critics Association press tour that they were hoping to revive The X-Files and 24. Now, for the first time, the network is also confirming that it's kicking another popular franchise to bring to primetime: X-Men.

Newman tells us that negotiations are under way to develop an X-Men series, inspired by the comic book series first published in 1963 and subsequent mega-hit film franchise (which has included seven movies, starting with X-Men in 2000.)

But here's the slight complication: While sister production company 20th Century Fox controls the film rights to the X-Men characters, the comic itself is owned by Marvel, which is based at rival Disney. A live-action TV series requires Marvel's blessing – and that has led to some delicate talks.

"It's in negotiations," Newman confirms. "We're cautiously optimistic, we had a good meeting with them. That will not be on a fast track creatively. This is just the deal, now we have to find the creative."
A live action X-Men series. :techman: If done right it could be awesome.

Thanks!

Well, needless to say, I'd give an X-Men show a whirl, whatever it is, with a desire to watch it all the way through! The article says:

OP article said:
Because they're focusing on deal points first, there's no writer and no firm concept yet (although there's been online speculation that it might revolve around the X-Men spinoff comic series X-Factor.) Because it will take time to develop, Newman doesn't think a show would be ready before the 2016-2017 TV season.

At least a year and a half away? No writer? No firm concept, even? Just a corporation and an IP? Well, then...

"Right! This calls for immediate discussion!"

I remember FOX tried to do this once with Generation X (A mostly 90's era X-men spin off, sort of a bit like the new Mutants, featuring Jubilee, Husk, Chamber and some other characters led by White Queen and Banshee)...but it ended up being pretty bad and no series resulted.

There was also of course Mutant X, which in the comics was a series about Havok (Cyclop's brother who appeared in the last two X-men movies) being trapped in another universe, but the TV series of the same name had nothing to do with that.

Fox didn't actually have anything to do with Mutant X, and Fox actually filed a lawsuit against Marvel and whoever else produced the show.

I hope Peter David is involved in some capacity if it is xfactor. His run was always my favorite and he brings a Guardians of the Galaxy type humor vibe.

It will never get off the ground. Why would Marvel (aka ABC) let Fox many a X-Men show?

Skrull rights for allowing TV show?

I believe Marvel was negotiating with Fox in the past over some secondary chars who had rights owned by fox because of fantastic four.

Unlikely as it might seem, this could do great things for the Marvel / Fox situation. The impetus for Marvel could be to trade for the rights to characters and concepts, but the end result could be a working relationship like we are hoping they are developing with Sony. Then again, it could just lead to more acrimony.

Even if it went well, I wouldn't really expect to see the X Men in the MCU anytime soon, but I suppose some sort of crossover may be possible sometime in the 2020's...

this will be a prayer come true for me but trek should go the Gotham root. this xmen series should not be like marvel agents of shield. it does not need to be tied to the xmen film universe. the series should be a new series with a new cast.

Although I am finding myself watching Agents of Shield only because it's set in the MCU (I think it's pretty poor) I absolutely would not want an X Men series that did not tie into the movie universe. I'm not watching Arrow, Flash and Co., and although I can't say for sure that I would if they were in the DCU (DC just doesn't interest me in the same way) it would be more likely.

There's so many parts of the X-verse that will never get screentime in the movies, a TV spinoff would be a great idea. A stand-alone show would be a hugely wasted opportunity...

a stand alone will be better. as much as I love the xmen films the films has just too many inconsistences for examples if it a spin off series based on the films then xmen most loved couple like rogue and gambit will never get togher. we wont have scott, jean, storm, wolverine in the tv show.

we wont have the Xavier and Magneto dynamic which is the heart of xmen.

this is why I would love a brand new xmen film series with the a list mutants.

the successful of heroes was solid proof a new xmen series could be done.

a spin of tv show based on the xmen film verse is not needed.

Fox aren't going to make a TV show using new versions of Magneto, Rogue, Gambit and Co. and risk damaging their cinema franchise. They'd use different (New) mutants...

As much as I love the more common members of the X-Men, I'd love for other characters to get some shine as well.

Exactly.

There's decades of stories and hundreds of characters that stand little or no chance of making it to the big screen.

What would you like to see in a TV show - teams lifted straight from the comics or new combinations ?

Which characters and stories would you want to see adapted ?
