Fox wants to try a sci-fi Western again!?!

I don't get why everytime a "sci-fi western" comes up people suddenly think it's a rip of Firefly. Newsflash: Oblivion, Galaxina, the Wild Wild West (the good one with Bob Conrad and the crapfest with Will Smith) and about a half dozen other films and TV shows I've forgotten had been doing the SF western thing long before Firefly came along.

No question; but Firefly has kinda ruined the "overt" SF/Western hybrid. And that's as much about the treatment it got as the series itself. The way that whole thing went down, no TV network----especially Fox----can go near the concept without it bringing Firefly to mind for all concerned.

Ironically, if Firefly hadn't been as good, this would be less of a problem.....

All it means is that for the concept to succeed again, it either has to be done exceptionally well, exceptionally differently, or it just has to wait a while longer. The bar is gradually settling at this point, but it's still fairly high.

I don't mind. Most science fiction these days carries most of the narrative trappings of a western anyway, so why not be more overt about it? Firefly certainly wasn't the first shot at such a concept, and it will hardly be the last.

Then again, this is on Fox, so this show will either be watered down to intellectual drivel, be cancelled early on, or both.

Why pitch a TV show to FOX? Really??? Especially if it's science fiction. The only SF show they've had survive all decade is Fringe.

this does not sound like Firefly it sounds more like a cowboy in the future type show, most likely set on Earth, with no space travel involved.

I love Firefly as much as the next person but sci-fi westerns were about before it and can be done in a much different way.

Westworld, Wild Wild West, Star Trek's Hour Of The Gun, Stephen King's Gunslinger series, TNG's A Fistful of Datas. Star Wars: A New Hope had a big time western influence (Solo's costume, the cantina in Mos Eisley, desert setting, The Searchers'-type scenes) while Battle Beyond The Stars was a remake of The Magnificent Seven.

It might well be poo, it might be cancelled,it might be okay but not as good as Firefly - but why not wait and see what it's like before dismissing it out of hand?

Outland?...Big Trouble in Little China?...Brisco County Jr...Wild Wild West?..the Lone Ranger cartoon from the 60's?...

I wish it success..but I'm not holding my breath...

I don't care if the show rocks big time, I'm not goign to watch it; my way of saying "thank you" to The New Morons at FOX for this, and what they've pulled on the new "Futurama".

Really? Dollhouse is still on the air. And Sarah Connor made it two seasons. I expect Fox is preparing this show to fill Dollhouse's slot next year after it's canceled. And Dollhouse probably should not have even gotten a 2nd season given its ratings.

People can blame Fox all they want, but at least they continue to try new Sci Fi shows.

Wagon Train to the stars??

I give the concept no chance whatsoever.

:P

If Star Trek actually had been Wagon Train to the Stars, I doubt it would have survived long. Why do people insist on thinking that Star Trek was all about a journey with the goal of space colonization! That wasn't what the series was about at all!

I've always wondered about that too, I know Roddenberry sold the series that way but I never got "Wagon Train" from Star Trek.

As a die hard Browncoat (with the Firefly 'verse being my third favourite franchise after Star Wars and new BSG) I can honestly say that I find this move by Fox insulting, and I shall not be supporting the show in any way.

He was probably just saying that to get support from sponsors and the network. Then when they saw what he was REALLY doing and that it worked, they let it be.

it was because it was a series using recurrent characters on a long journey.

I'll watch it... IF it throws in some steampunk elements. That could make it work. Futuristic Western does nothing for me.

I actually disliked Firefly as a Western in space. I really did think that choice sucked.
