FOX: Sleepy Hollow - Season Discussion

It stank!

If the Bones part was designed to draw new fans, it failed with me. I haven't heard so much techobabble since Voyager ended. The Sleepy Hollow part suffered cross- (<anger) -contamination. I barely remember watching.

I never watched Bones and didn't see their end of the crossover, did I miss something, should I go back and watch it? BTW is Brennan supposed to have Aspergers or something or was it Deschanels acting because she was kinda weird around the other characters.

From what I recall, I think she's sort of portrayed that way, as someone who's emotionally detached and has trouble understanding other people's feelings, but I don't know if she's ever been explicitly diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum.

Okay, according to Wikipedia, she's implicitly intended to have Asperger's, but they've never said so outright "in order to increase the appeal of the show on network television." And apparently she's gotten more conventionally emotional over time.

I think being with Booth has slowly taught her how to act around people, and he actively corrects her behavior when she's really being unintentionally socially unacceptable. But honestly, I've just never liked her character. I like everyone else on the show except her, though, especially Angela and Jack.

Just finished Hulu-ing the 2-parter. I thought the Bones half was basically okay, because it was interesting to get to see Ichabod and Abbie from the outside, as it were -- to see how they and their world look to people who don't know about the supernatural side of things. That lent an interesting perspective to it.

Although I don't like Brennan or Booth at all. They're both pretty annoyingly acted, especially Brennan, and kind of annoyingly written as well. And the rest of the characters just sort of blurred together as a bunch of lab rats.

Also, how the hell do you get facial reconstruction from a body without a skull? That's total nonsense. They should've come up with a better way of identifying the body as Howe's, say, by his ring or pocketwatch, or by evidence of injuries that matched those sustained by Howe in his military career.

I feel the Bones half would work better as a standalone than the Sleepy Hollow half. If you just watched the former, you'd probably just see Crane and Mills as a couple of eccentric guest stars creating a complication for the case -- although you might be puzzled by the references to the Washington Irving story. But the SH half only works as a continuation of what came before. If you skipped the Bones episode, you'd come in and see the SH episode starting with a recap of scenes you hadn't seen. That's not going to work so well on its own in future DVD or online releases.

As for the SH half, I was a little surprised they didn't make Zombie Howe a recurring antagonist, the new Horseman, as it were. This season's villains have been missing a personal connection with the heroes, or a connection to the Revolutionary-War backstory. Keeping Howe around would've remedied that.

Yeah, that is a good idea. Plus it would have given them an easy excuse for lots of Revolutionary War flashbacks involving Betsy Ross since she appear to be a big part of the conflict with Howe.

Oh, I forgot to mention the funniest part: Pandora literally stole candy from a baby. Well, from a small child, but still.

Agree completely. CSI and Bones often come up with forensic techniques that sound like total BS, and that one was the worst ever.

Villain of the Week: Queen Bee, but she wasn't that exciting. Joe and Jenny's side adventure seemed more interesting.

Joe Corbin is an idiot. “Hey, Jenny, reach in his pocket with your bare hands to retrieve the thing that I just saw him carefully handling with gloves moments ago. What’s that? You don’t still have the magical item you were holding in your bare hand? I’m not curious or concerned about that at all.” I hope Jenny and Joe never get intimate, since he probably has no understanding of prophylactics.

As soon as big, tall, manly Danny started attacking the much tinier Abbie, my immediate reaction was, “Oh, he’s toast now.” Nobody in their right mind would mess with her.

Seeing Betsy Ross overshadow Grace Dixon here, with Grace reduced merely to a wise black advisor to a white action heroine, just made me resent the very existence of the Betsy Ross character even more than I did already.

But I am glad that Pandora's Power Rangers-esque one-monster-per-week regimen has already reached its endgame, rather than being a season-long thing. I have no idea what will come next, but hopefully it'll be more interesting than her just standing in a cave monologuing to a tree.

You know... Given that Pandora is derived from Greek mythology (however much they've tried to associate her with earlier mythoi), it occurs to me to be suspicious of the fact that Ichabod's current romantic interest is named Zoe Corinth -- the Greek word for "life" followed by a Greek place name (which, among other things, is where Sisyphus came from, where Oedipus grew up, and where Medea was abandoned by Jason). Especially since "Corinth" is far from a common surname, reducing the odds that it's a coincidence. So there may be more to her than there appears.

This was another good episode in a strong season. We had a very cool buggy monster and a nice anti-climactic showdown with Pandora in the underground lair. They should have brought a few cans of Raid.

I loved the brief team up of Betsy Ross and Grace Dixon in the flashback, though I thought it ended way too abruptly. I'd love to see them teamed up on a regular basis in the future (or past), as a Revolutionary analog to Abby and Ichabod.

And Ichabod and Zoe had their first date. Twice. :adore: Nothing bad better happen to Zoe.

I'm glad we finally got some real movement on the Pandora story.
Definitely agree with Christopher about Jenny and the stone thing. I know as soon as they showed Nevins handle it with a glove, and then Jenny grabbed it with her pair hand. I would have expected Jenny to know enough to be more careful.
It was nice to see Grace Dixon again, even if it was only a brief appearance.
I'm loving Crane and Zoe, I really hope she doesn't end up being evil.

Come on people! The sooner we can get Sleepy Hollow cancelled, the better chance we have of getting Tom Mison a part on the new Star Trek show.

Has another show crashed and burned as hard as Sleepy Hollow? While not a ratings juggernaut, it was satisfying to watch and way more enjoyable then it should have been. Now can't wait for it to be gone, sad truly sad. I would love for Mison to be part of Star Trek, he is truly what made Sleepy Hollow work. I will miss him and the character of Ichabod Crane. I guess I'll have to re-watch Salmon Fishing in the Yemen.

Okay, how about Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda? It started out as a very smart, well-written hard-SF show with enormous potential (though hampered by a tiny budget and a lack of talented prosthetic-makeup artists), and degenerated into one of the stupidest, most incoherent shows I've ever seen. Earth: Final Conflict before it had much the same degeneration, only more gradually.

Anyway, the point is, I think Sleepy Hollow's current season is a substantial improvement on the previous one. I could do without Betsy Ross, and the lack of a villain with personal stakes for the heroes is an issue, but it's more solid than it was last year (and best of all, no Hawley).
