Fox News: 120% Of The Public Thinks Scientists May Falsify GW Data

I figured since Gertch watches FNC he wouldn't know the difference anyway.

Combining polls so that they are totaled instead of averaged is entirely dishonest. I don't care who does it.

I don't think that it's dishonest. Just comes from people who never learned basic statistics.
These are journalists we're talking about. I doubt most universities have much of a math or statistics requirement for their journalism majors. However, I think it would be in the best interest of many news outlets to have a statistician on hand to just look over any statistics that are to be published BEFORE they are actually published. It seems that FoxNews needs it more than most.

While we're on the subject, it wouldn't hurt to have a scientist or two on hand before publishing science or medicine related stories, as well.

I don't think you need to have gone to college to figure out that if your poll adds up to more than 100%, you have a problem. Just me?

Marian

Well, when the guy was reading the poll, he started to add them up, but then seemed to stumble---I think he realized what he was seeing as he was reading it.

According to Media Matters, they combined the "very likely" and "somewhat likely" numbers to reach 59 percent, then added the 35% "very likely" back in again. They also dropped "not likely at all" and "unsure" entirely. The numbers for the former were mashed into "not very likely" and the latter were just left out.

It's common in this kind of statistics to add groups together to create cumulative percentiles.

It's ok to combine groups but it's not ok to double count groups. It's also not ok to just drop groups. They're basically double counting groups that they favor and dropping groups they want to hide. That's dishonest.

I know that at least at the UCs, all students have to take a year of math unless they took advanced math in HS.

As for the subject? I am still in support of climate change laws, BUT, I do believe more of this 'global warmning' is due to the sun. Perhaps we are livnig Picard's Inner Light?

There's a long list of peer-reviewed scientific papers saying it's not the sun. Even the one often cited by skeptics actually says it isn't.

And there are no peer-reviewed scientific papers that dispute anthropogenic climate change at all, let alone advance an alternative theory. Given the riches and approbation that would certainly come to whoever published such a paper, the fact that no one has is, I think, pretty compelling.

What this poll does show (before Fox's wrangling) is how the anti-science people have done a really good job on capitalizing on the whole email thing... the science behind climate change as a whole hasn't been shaken in the slightest, but public opinion has certainly been damaged. Just goes to show you that good PR can overcome a lack of facts, I suppose.

Also, revisions to the general education curriculum (for next year's incoming class) will make all students fulfill a Statistical Reasoning GE requirement.

Oh I know. It's a lot like saying networks that leave out important information are quality journalism. Huh-huh yup.

That response makes no sense. What are you talking about?

I figured since Gertch watches FNC he wouldn't know the difference anyway.

Wow that's weird. All the above didn't show on the original post.

I just thought it was a personal attack out of the blue but I guess it was a personal attack in response to something.

Wait, did I wander into TNZ by mistake again? Or is this supposed to be the level of debate we are to have here?

This is why I will continue to get all of my political analysis from Lindsay Lohan's Twitter account, thank you very much.

Anyone who gives credibility to ANY news outlet (FNC, CNN, MSNBC, ad nauseum) is a damned fool.

:bolian: And television in general.

What I find odd about fox news is that fox news is very conservative biased.....but the fox network shows the most unconservative stuff one can imagine. :rommie:

The lack of detectable increases in solar radiation kind of puts the sun outside of the suspect catagory.

This is quite possibily the worst 'news' channel that ever existed in the history of the universe.

I don't think these guys are even CAPABLE of telling the truth anymore. In fact, I'm not at all certain they are living in the same space/time continuum as the rest of us.
