Maybe the MIB died a long time ago (I mean we've never seen him alive in the present so he could be dead) and now he "haunts" the island. Controling smokie, etc...

Now that jacob is dead he might have new powers as well.

To either clear things up a bit or confuse things further (and perhaps a little of both), Ilana says Smokey can't become anyone else now. He's stuck with Locke's likeness.

yah, and Smokie is seeing Ghosts that he didn't create. And he seems to be surprised by them.

So is the little kid a ghost created by Jacob? Or are there just random ghosts running around the island?

But if mib is stuck in Locke form, how did he assume the form of bens daughter under the temple to tell Ben to obey Locke? Is he only stuck in Locke form after Jacobs death?
