Force Fields...

In most Trek series I have seen, whenever the REALLY want to contain someone or something they erect a level 10 force field. In other episodes they erect a level 3 field. Is it ever covered just how much more force is involved in a level 10 as opposed to a level 3 or lower, and just how much force can a level 10 contain??

Well you get forcefields you can touch with no problem and then others that if you touch you get a shock and THEN there are forcefields that when you touch them you get thrown backwards.

I imagine the low end fields are just barriers like a wall whereas the higher scale one can cause harm.

Seems to be a function of the amount of energy pumped into the field.
e.g. a level 1 is enough to hold back air and a person (electrostatic zapping being a good repellant to a casual person). Whereas the highter you go, the more punishment it can take, with L10 being the most any given generator can dish out.
Presumably, L3 is the low end of the phaser resistant fields.

Kinda like doors, even:
L1: flimsy wooden door
L5: solid core steel with hardened latches and such
L10: Bomb shelter door

What about Shuttle bay and Emergency force fields, what force level would they have? The way it looks the ones in Shuttle bays hold back the vacuum of space and seem to prevent people from passing through them (I think) from the inside but are able to allow Shuttles to pass through them.

My guess, and I really am not sure if this is how it's supposed to work in Star Trek, is that force fields are very similar to shields, and the way shuttles exit the force fields in the shuttle bay is by modulating their shields to the same frequency as the force field.

allows solid stuff through just not the air...

also.. 47 it HOLDS the air in.. cant reall hold back a vacuum lol

:guffaw:

"quickly Mr Data raise the force field before the Vacuum of space leaks into the Shuttle bay!, it's hard to get that stuff out again!"

Sorry, physics isn't really a strong topic of knowledge for me. At least I know enough that the force fields do stop the Bay crew from dying or from being sucked (got that right) into Space.

Sorry for that but as I said I've never really made outbursts like that, I just felt that this time it deserved it. Again I'm sorry.
