I was recently at Wal-Mart, where I saw some $9-$13 deluxe editions of Forbidden Planet & Logan's Run. I haven't seen either of these movies but I hear they're classics. Do they really hold up? I'm running out of space on my DVD shelf and in the other places where I store the DVDs that aren't on the shelf. That plus my limited income, whaddaya say?

Forbidden Planet is terrific, I think, and the special edition certainly has enough extra features to warrant the purchase (I'm holding out for the Blu-Ray myself, which shouldn't take too long, since there was an HD-DVD).

I haven't seen Logan's Run.

I love Logan's Run. And Forbidden Planet largely inspired Gene Roddenberry to come up with Star Trek. They're both classics.

Some parts of Logan's Run would be deemed quite dated, such as a certain robot, but once the characters get out into the open, it's an impressive movie even to this day. I re-watched it recently and I was struck by how Fallout 3-ish it was.

I love both of those movies, but they are probably not for everyone. You might want to check out clips of them ahead of time to see whether you mind how they feel, if you can find some clips online.

Ironically, I think Logan's Run is the more dated of the two, despite being made two decades later.

Buy them both!!!!! Both are really good movies. Was the "Forbidden Planet" one colourised or the original B&W?

If you ignore the wardrobe and sets, it's no more dated than reading "Brave New World" and still has aspects & features recognizable today...don't be distracted by dressing.

You must be thinking of some other movie. Forbidden Planet was most definitely made in color.

Forbidden Planet is definitely worth a blind buy... it's a must for any serious sci-fi fan.

Logan's Run... eh, it's worth a rental, IMO. I caught it on TV last year, and I thought it was okay, but rather overrated.

I'd say both are worth blind buys. Forbidden Planet is an all-time classic-- the second best movie ever made, in my opinion. Logan's Run is not at that level, but it's still very good and worth watching.

I think Logan's Run may look dated to some because it's so recent, actually. Its futuristic look is derived from fashions that younger people now associate with their parents so it looks old-fashioned to them, rather than futuristic; also, the sets and costuming have a lot of color, which the current generation considers "cheesy." Give it another twenty five years and it will become disconnected enough from contemporary social context to lose that veneer.

If you have the money, buy both. If you must choose one, choose Forbidden Planet. It's that simple.

I used to think Logan's Run was ridiculous because I couldn't envisage civilisation getting to the point where people would become expendible at a certain age. However, with the ever increasing average age of populations, and rising cost of health care and pension provision, I'm not so sure. The young might grow weary of the burden of supporting us oldies and invent Carousel to bump us off before we outnumber them. Not sure how to market it though... Anyway, it's quirky, a bit cheesy, and Jenny Agutter gets her kit off briefly -- your choice.

Forbidden Planet can be considered Star Trek version 0.1 -- it was released in "CinemaScope and Color":

It's a no-brainer -- buy it.

Hell, yes! for FP...

...and a go-for-it for LR. Just do yourself a favor and go find a copy of the original novel AFTER you watch the movie and see what it should have been.

And if anyone ever suggests you watch the LR TV show, drop a smokebomb at their feet and run far, far away. :D

RJ, Vendikarr and Klaus have it exactly right. :)

In the same way that Trek was a long way ahead of 60s TV SF, FP was streets ahead of other 50s SF movies. AND it has Robbie the Robot!

As for LR, it was certainly different for its day, and I think it's had a lasting influence on SF TV and movies. But yes, avoid the LR TV series.

Well, Logan's Run is worth it just for Michael York's hammy performance and, for guys, Jenny Agutter's body.

And ST fans always point out the guy in the crowd at the very end who waves the Vulcan "salute."

Forbidden Planet is classic. Yeah, ST 0.1. The whole Krill installation views were copied for so many movies since then. Don't worry about the SFX, just accept them.

I think we're all agreed here. FORBIDDEN PLANET is a timeless classic. LOGAN'S RUN has a certain nostalgic appeal, but hasn't aged as well.
