Food Shortages

Are you preparing for future food shortages??

Do you believe we could be hit by food shortages?
Who's this "we"? If you me "we" as a species there already are and always have been food shortages. It's a matter of location. If you me "we" as in "we in the modern first world nations". No.

Are you preparing for future food shortages?
No.

if so what are you doing?
Nothing.

if not why not?
Because it won't happen.

Why 365 of those packages? Why not buy a 5 kilo bag at once.. or in your case.. about 60 of them?

OK I exaggerated the 365 packets, i'll probably just buy the biggest packets of it I can find and store as much as possible in my spare room.

I wonder what other foods would last a long time in storage. Hmmm.

Most canned goods. Tuna, Sardines, veggies, soups, fruits etc, tomatoes and pasta sauce also comes to mind when thinking you having that ammount of pasta..
Rice
Potatoemash powder
Soups (powdered)
Raemen noodles

Google world food shortages.

One Link I found in 2 seconds of searching.

There is nothing in here about it effecting developed countries. Yes, when oil spiked in 2007/2008, food prices in the those countries rose marginally due primarily to increased shipping costs, but there was never anything like a shortage of either production or demand in developed countries.

Um, your own "source" disproves your "point":
"In the U.S., Australia, and Europe, there's a very substantial capacity to adapt to the effects on food - with money, technology, research and development," Howden said. "In the developing world, there isn't."

Again, this has nothing to do with food shortages in developed countries. There's also a large component of exceeding population carrying capacity in those parts of the world; they aren't good food producers to begin with, we ship in medical care, the population explodes and of course they're "food insecure" (which is a euphemism for "hungry").

Unless you get your bread from Mali, you're probably fine.

Yes, again, this is a tragedy, but it has no effect on food availability in developed countries, unless we turn around and ship everything to poor countries and starve ourselves willfully. Where do you get from this information that we should all begin stockpiling pasta a rice, Chicken Little?

There have been food shortage "predictions" for nearly 30 years.

I'm still waiting....

And, any shortage that would otherwise happen in the near future could easily be prevented if people weren't so wasteful.

Having worked in several different kitchens, I was often appalled by the amount of eatable food that went into the trash.

Several times I packed up left overs and brought 'em down to the shelter.

This is the first I've heard of it and quite frankly if there is a food shortage, it won't make any difference to be because I don't eat anything anyway.

And magnets. Those will come in handy.

Is this an attempt to troll?

Who me? :guffaw:

In all seriousness if shit goes down and no one is running the shit I plan to barter my technical skills for food. You know... build weapons for the local warlord using my workshop equipment and stuff like that. So stocking up on magnets isn't really a bad idea 'cause you could trade them for food and ESOO. Oh yes and blue dye. Rumor has it blue food dye can cure spine injuries.

Sure, a food shortage will kill millions in Africa, but we're not in Africa. The worst thing that will happen to us is a 10-20% hike in food prices per year. Bread will never disappear from shelves or rise to $30 a loaf (not for a few decades anyway).

No I'm not worried. These 3rd world countries are always suffering food shortages and chaos of all kinds. Even if there was enough food to go around there, the dictators that rule these people probably wouldn't give it to them. Better to keep them weak and docile. :(

Of course food shortages are always a possibility. Some kind of crazy blight could spring up out of nowhere, or you could imagine any number of other doomsday scenarios happening.

I feel like if you sit around worrying about all of these far fetched things that might possibly happen, you're kind of cheating yourself out of life.

I think everybody should have short term supplies of food/water/batteries, etc... but seriously stocking up on massive amounts of food? If everybody was really starving, unless you are in some kind of armed fortress the second people find out YOU have food and they don't..say goodbye to your food and possibily even your life if you try and keep an angry mob from stealing it.

Living in Hurricane Alley we try to keep a months worth of food and other supplies on hand at all times anyways.

If your country is a net importer of food or depends heavily on the sea for nourishment I can foresee problems. If your country is a net exporter of food, not so much.

Personally, we normally keep about a three month supply of canned and frozen food on hand.

How will you keep people from getting your food?

What about rodent and insect infestations?

Food storage is very simple in principle. There are all sort of air tight / rodent proof containers out there. Those are especially handy for bulk items like sugar, salt, flour, rice, legumes. Throw in a couple packs of desiccants and you are good to go. The cans are self explanatory. Like I said its simple in principle. Problem is that there is a shortage of containers and desiccants these days.

Voted no. Not worried, not doing anything. I didn't waste any money on batteries for Y2K either.
