Flying?

I use to love sitting next to the window, but these days that seat leaves me feeling very claustrophobic, so now i HAVE to sit on the aisle. God forbid i have to sit in the middle seat!

Yeah, I'm lucky that people I travel with let me have the aisle seat generally. I get airsick (meds or not) so it helps to have some breathing room.

From the FAQ, that you should really read in its entirety:

How early should I arrive at the airport prior to my flight?

It is recommended that travelers arrive in the terminal approximately 90 minutes prior to departure, although, two hours prior is prudent during peak travel periods. In addition, most airlines have a required bag check of 30-45 minutes prior to departure. With the new security checkpoint procedures and other screening measures in place, passengers should allow adequate time for security checks.

In your case I would arrive at least two hours before.

We're lucky here in Ottawa, I have to say. I can show up 45 minutes before my flight, check in, go through security, and still have time to buy a coffee or check my emails before going to the gate.

Oh, and personally? I love airports. I know, that makes me strange, but there's something about 'em that I just like.

^ Even though I am a drinker, so far I've made a point of not drinking in the air, from what I understand it the dehydration in an aeroplane makes for a bitch of a hangover, though of course I'm not speaking from experience.

It's such a horrible feeling, isn't it? :ack:

I concur with the idea of checking out some maps of the airports you're travelling through before you go, you can see exactly which gate you're coming in on, where you've got to go to get your transfer or baggage or rental car, etc. I flew into Philadelphia for the first time last year and it would have been more difficult to get around if I hadn't known about the buses that link the various terminals.

I also have a rule about flying within the US and Canada: I do one transfer, that's it. Every time anyone I know ever has to get on 3+ planes in a day during their travels, one of them gets delayed and they miss the other ones, putting a monkey wrench in the whole thing. I also hate stopovers that are too short, especially during the winter when there are frequent delays. Are you really going to be perfectly comfortable having only a 45 minute window to land, get off the plane, get through a big airport and check in to the new one? Maybe, but what if the first plane was even 10 minutes late to the terminal? Now you've got a potential problem.

A lot of the time you might not have a choice in any of this, especially if you're travelling on business and have to be in a certain place on a certain day.

I love flying. As a student, haven't had a chance to fly for a while, though. The views can be awesome (if you have a window seat).

During longer flights, I want to stand and walk now and then to prevent deep vein thrombosis (Google will tell you more about it), and generally, just because sitting for longer periods of time does get plain uncomfortable at some point. Someone also mentioned that you should always keep an eye on your luggage - indeed, not only because of thieves, but also to prevent anyone from placing anything in your luggage that could cause trouble. Don't let your luggage out of your sight at any point.

Airports are quite fascinating to me - they're usually pretty shiny and architecturally interesting. You also get to see all kinds of people so that is fun, too. :D

Its a good idea to go to the aiport early indeed.
One safes lots of stress by doing that:techman:
I am sometimes at the airport even more than 2 hours early, because once in Helsinki, the line to the Check-In was so long, that it went trough the main check-in hall and around the corner:eek:
And sometimes though, the airport(s) can feel like they are almost empty:)
Im happy how quickly the airport security checks usually go in Europe..and the airports arent usually very complex.

Best Airlines in Europe from personal experience:bolian::
- Lufthansa
- Czech Airlines

- Finnair
SAS is also OK..but Air Baltic didint really give me much to hurray about:shifty: Ive also flown with AirBerlin and Air Dolimite.

I have had two occasions, when the person next to me has drinked not only the served achohol..but also his own stuff
( the latter being against the aviation law).
The second time this happened, the young guy complained that that his eyes hurt and I had to keep the shade down on my window..sigh:rolleyes:
If this drinking stuff ever happens again, I am gonna report him/her to the flight attendant..no matter how petty it might seem to some:D
Luckily these days I mostly travel with someone:)

I think achohol should be banned from airplanes.
And If one cant go without booze for few hours..well, I think that person is pretty much an alchoholic:shrug:

Another good idea is get wing exit row(usual fill up first), when you book the flight. The seat rows are spaced extra wide for safety. It's the best economy seats.

As far as airlines, depends on priorities, and again direct non-stop trumps all. But entertainment wise Jet Blue is usually the winner here. I just recently flew Delta and they've upgraded to seat screens on just about all their planes, which is nice. United would be my next choice, then Southwest(great prices, but the cattle call boarding process isn't great) after that I have no preferences.

I just told my friend tonight that next week I'll be on a KLM flight that apparently has free booze and she acted surprised that I didn't know all airlines have free booze.
Am I wrong? I'd never heard of that till last week and only about KLM.

That's the exception rather than the norm. Most airlines charge you through the nose for alcohol. I paid $6 for a 355 ml can of Molson on an Air Canada flight once.

^Yea, your friend does not know what she is talking about.

I think airports are cool to hang out in, just wish they had about %50 less people. Most of them are way too crowded in the southern U.S.

It really is. I can handle up to five hours or so without serious problems, but travelling to India always presents a challenge. There's either a stopover in Europe somewhere with around 18 hours in the air, or a direct 15 hour flight (which I've found I actually prefer).

And then I always get sick in India, so the return journey is even worse.
