Florida Trek conventions?

I went to my first Trek convention on April 7th, 1990 and George Takei was the guest.

It was a convention known as "Trek Fest".

I went to a few cons under the "Trek Fest" name in the years after and met James Doohan, Rene Auberjoinis, and Michael Dorn.

There was a Jonathan Frakes con too, but he didn't do an autograph or photo session.

In 1995, I also went to a "Vulkon" convention in Boca Raton and met Walter Koenig. This was a different convention company. I guess this was one of the few times they went into South Florida because after this it always seemed like their conventions were in Central Florida, which was WAY out of the way, or out of state.

"Trek Fest" apparently shut down sometime in the mid-90s and the "Vulkon" conventions were always at least 5 hours or so away and had a hard time justifying the cost (I was a college student) of driving, hotel, convention costs, etc.

So I never went to another convention again until I found out about Florida Supercon in Miami back in 2009.

Did anyone here ever to some of those Florida conventions?

I was at Florida SuperCon this past June 28 and Nichelle Nichols, Walter Koenig, Marina Sirtis, and Robin Curtis were scheduled. I didn't actually see Sirtis, but the others were there, signing autographs to a fairly small group (at $40.00 a pop; $35.00 for Curtis). The Trek luminaries were well towards the back of the Miami Beach Convention Center and while it was nice seeing them there, the prices kept me away from their tables.

I though to myself that once upon a time the likes of Nichols and Koenig would have headlined a Con like this themselves. However, time marches on. There is a whole lot more pop culture out there--an overwhelming amount imo--and there were kids dressed as characters I have no clue as to who they are! I was there for the comic book legends of my youth: Mike Zeck, Jim Shooter, John Beatty, John Romita, Jr. They had nowhere near the draw of Karen Gilian, Hayley Atwell (both of whom are stunningly gorgeous in "real life").

I live in east-central Florida, but I certainly wouldn't visit here in June if I could help it -- nor for several months on either side. The temperatures and humidity are just awful.

December or January might be very nice! ;)
