Flat Earth

You explain to them refraction causes an optical illusion and what you're really seeing is mirage and not the actual object and they just roll their eyes and think you're making stuff up to fill a hole in the conspiracy.

Which is ironic because they explain away the curve you see on planes by saying plane windows have a fisheye effect.

I mean, it's not that hard to figure out the Earth is round via the same method Aristotle used thousands of years ago.

No, Redfern got it right.

I was always intrigued by the flat-earthers' model of the world that shows the North Pole at the center, and what we recognize as the continent of Antarctica as surrounding the edges — basically a wall of ice at the edge of the world. I tried reasoning it out from their point of view. Ignoring the fact that the motions of the sun, moon and stars wouldn't make any sense (not to mention the horizon and the changing of the seasons): I realized that for their model to work, that wall of ice would need to have a circumference of something like 80,000 miles. If you tried sailing the Antarctic perimeter, it'd take a very different amount of time in "their" model than it would in "ours". Any estimates as to how long?

I mean, not to say that it'd be easy to disprove the flat-earth model that way, but it's possible — assuming you could shanghai a flat-earther onto the voyage and get him to track the length of the coastline.

The existence of people who insist that Earth is flat is fascinating, but we have to remember there's very few of them. The Flat Earth Society's website lists 555 people who have ever joined it, and I imagine a few of those people joined as a joke, and a few of those people have died or left the organization. The Flat Earth Society contains fewer than 1 in every 10,000,000 people. Of course fewer than 1 in 10,000,000 people are really weird. You can probably find far more people in the world who think themselves to be Jesus Christ.

I'm me and there is no me beside me.
While there may be few flat-earthers there are nevertheless a lot of creationists who believe that there is no evolution. Though admittedly politics does indeed seem to go in circles, in biological terms that's not the case. Still, in several US states it's the official opinion that gets taught in school. From there to the flat earth theory and burning witches it's only a tiny step for foolishness but a big leap backward for humankind.

There's more than you think who just haven't joined the organization. Like, Kyrie Irving the NBA player believes the world is flat, but except for one slip on some podcast he knows that talking about it is bad for his career.

I'm me and there is no me beside me.

Not believing in evolution is more understandable than not believing the Earth is round though, since evolution is a lot harder to directly observe.

over here, the strawberries are evolving quickly and preparing for world domination. See for yourself - this is from this week's local gazette:

not yet but we have white blackbirds, sparrows and crows. The mutations are caused by the emissions of a nuclear power plant. Thank heavens it was switched off after Fukushima.
It was yet another case of the flat-earth-phenomenon: politicians believed what the economy bosses told them "our power plant is completely secure and only harmless radiation leaks from it". As they found out after Tchernobyl, the leakage was considerable and anything but harmless. They fixed most of the problems but nevertheless the leukemia rate among children in the power plant's vicinity is still 8 times higher than the average. Other sorts of cancer occur 5 times oftener than average.

Fisheye effect windows that only work 10,000km+ up, exclude the wings at all times and are generally good at defying measurement

^^I doubt any explanation would make a flat earther happy, if you plopped them at the edge of the atmosphere with nothing around them, they would just say the curviture of their own eyeballs makes the earth look round, and if you took those away they would then say the curviture of the brain was next to blame, as they will continue to just keep moving the goalposts until it is not making them money.......did i say that last bit out loud. lol

They couldn't claim the curvature of their heads was involved, 'cause those are definitely flat. :guffaw:
