Flat Characters

The problem with alot of them was they LOOKED like characters, they seemed scripted, not real.

Outside Picard, Worf and Data they didn't seem to be real.

I totally disagree that and the name of this topic.
They all had their episodes and their moments.
They were different than people today, who are less perfect, but they definitely didn't seemed scripted.

Maybe it was just too many chars. With TOS only having the big three it was easier to give them more distinctive traits that made them very individual and very separate. With TNG there was way more than a big three.

Now to target Worf, a very developed and focused on character.....thanks to Denise Crosby. My theory is that if Crosby who played Security Chief and Chief Tactical Officer Yar din't leave the show, Worf would be like Geordi, underused and not developed. Evidence supports my theory. Look in season 1 before episode 23, Where is Worf ? He is in a red unifourm as a relief con officer, and will float around from station to station, holding the rank of Lieutenant Junior grade.

After Yar's death.... GOLD UNIFORM promotion to full Lieutenant in the Ops division serving as Chief of Security and Chioef tactical officer.
In episodes late ron like yesterdays enterprise when Yar is alive.. where is Worf ? I dont know, i can't remeber him being in that episodes and if he was. he proably was in a red uniform somewhere.

So back top the point i attempted to make.. Worf wouldn't be a a fan favorite or as important in TNG if Crosby did not leave so I think She is to reson for his sucess as a character. After 7 years on TNG where did Worf go... to do a few years on DS9

Worf wasn't on the ship in "Yesterday's Enterprise" because the Federation and the Klingon Empire were at war. Worf would have been on the enemy's side.

Tasha Yar was my favorite TNG character. Picard comes second. The rest come as "they were there too, taking up space and moving the plot around."

And except for brief comedic scenes, I HATE Worf. He is the Character That Ate The Show -- not only in TNG, but eventually in DS9 as well.

Oh, and I also liked Dr. Pulaski. She was older, more inclined to be cynical and grumpy, hated the transporter... basically a female version of McCoy. And she didn't look so damn perfect and pretty. In short, she seemed less of a character and more of a person.

One of the little known behind-the-scenes issues that left TNGs characters sorely lacking in development was that for the first 2 seasons, there was an edict in the writers room from Gene that in terms of how to write the dialoge for each character was NOT to treat them as living beings, but as "archetypes" through which varying commentaries on the plot could be elicited.

The idea was not dissimilar to the "chorus" of the deaf ambassador in "Loud as a Whisper".

So, in those vital early episodes when our notions of who these characters are and what they mean were being developed, we never saw Capt. Picard, , Troi, Dr. Crusher, Wesley, Worf, etc.

What we DID see was the Leader, the Empath, the Mother, the Child, the Warrior, etc.

Fo' sure. I also preferred Pulaski over Crusher. She didn't seem so stuffy as the rest of the cast. As you say, she seemed "more of a person."
