Fixing A Hole-A Look At The New Beatles Box Set

So I take it these remasters aren't going to be your usual "LOL LETS COMPRESS THE HELL OUT OF EVERYTHING AND MAKE IT LOUDERZ" affairs?

No, not at all. They went to great pains to remaster the albums properly. The regular CD versions of 1987 sounded really bad, and fans have waited ages for a decent CD version to appear (well, an official one, anyway). For the mono versions, no compression was used, for the stereo versions, some compression was used but it's not at all like the over-compressed albums of today.

All of the stereo remastered albums will be available individually. Fear not. Amazon has pre-order listings for each of them.

bol.com has them individualy listed as well...
And the box set is €259.99 here in the Netherlands...

 It's much cheaper here in Germany. But partially sold out at the moment.

I went to a store nearby to listen to some of the albums and it's indeed much better than the earlier official CDs. However, I didn't hear a difference to the Dr Ebbetts versions. In the case of Magical Mystery Tour I actually prefer his version of the German stereo version.
Too bad they don't sell the mono albums individually. I'd buy "Help!" and "Rubber Soul" because of the original stereo versions on those CDs (although I own the original stereo version of "Help!" on vinyl, apparently). I won't buy a whole box at over 200 € for those two albums, though.

Got "Past Masters" yesterday and "Revolver" today. The difference is so dramatic it actully takes awhile to get use to. I like it. I too, after listening to the Beatles all my life, am hearing all sorts of things I never heard before. Everything is so crisp and clear, just stunning.

Agreed. I finally listened to one and it's very impressive, well worth the purchases.

Of all the songs I've listened to so far, I think Tomorrow Never Knows is the one that has benefited the most from the remastered. An older version of it I heard sounded like crap, this one is crisp, clear, and beautiful. My opinion of this song has actually improved based on the remaster.

And here's a really odd (and annoying) thing: I was trying to rip all of the albums to iTunes, but three songs: I'll Be Back from "Hard Day's Night," Good Night from "The White Album," and Her Majesty from "Abbey Road" are come up as being fifteen hours long. iTunes locks up as it tries to rip them. If I try to play those tracks in Windows Media Player, they play up until the point that the track is actually supposed to end and then WMP encounters an error. What's going on?

I just saw them here at HMV in Toronto. Individually, they're priced at $12.99-great for the Canadian consumer, and for me.

The only exceptions are The White Album and the Past Masters compilations-both cost $29.99, IIRC.

Wow, that's steep. I paid $13.99 for the single discs, and $20 for Past Masters.

These are the last songs on every disc, if I'm not mistaken (I'm at work at the moment). I suppose the problem lies with the mini-documentary at the end of each album. Probably iTunes doesn't know what to do with it. I'd recommend a decent audio ripping program, anyway, like 'Exact Audio Copy' (it's free).

It could be your computer, or that you haven't set up iTunes right? Maybe that's it.

Also, is anyone getting The Mono set. I'm not obsessive enough to purchase that too, but I'd be interested in seeing how it fares.

Yeah, I picked up the Beatles In Mono box (got a nice discount on it, too!). Loving it, of course. I've picked up a few of the stereo CDs so far (Abbey Road, White Album, Pepper) as well. I will grab the others soon, but I've already dumped a ton of money on the Fab Four this week including the box and the game/guitar.

As expected from the samples I had heard, everything sounds so crisp and clear. It is really a pleasure to listen to the harmonies on some of those songs with these new remastered CDs.

Anybody playing the game? I've been having an absolute blast with it so far. Sang harmonies while drumming the first time through Story Mode, then I just did harmonies with the gf online. Mostly just sang lead today. Even more fun playing knowing these songs as well as I do after all these years.

Tried that and it worked. Thanl you so much.

I gave up on finding a Stereo set. I can' t afford it with trying to payoff my credit cards. So I am going to just buy the individual albums, slowly working my way through the catalog. Which is fine. When I buy huge CD or DVD sets I tend to be overwhelmed. This way I can listen to their musical evolution.

On 9/9/9 I had two separate conversations with strangers about the Beatles. Really enthusiastic sharing of a common interest. One was a man and his son in Target. He was 4 when they first appeared on the Sullivan show. He did not even know what an actual beetle was at that age. So he was told they have shells. So he told me how he was envisioning them appearing in something like a turtle costume! LOL! THe other was a guy who works in the same building as I do. Though we had never spoken to each other before wearing my Revolver t-shirt changed all that.

Cool. My pleasure. :)

The mono set has fewer discs, but is more expensive?!?
Yikes...

The official explanataion is that the Mono Box is aimed at collectors and produced in a very limited small number. I hear there were only 10,000 sets originally produced for the whole of the US. They're reprinting 3000 more. Less items produced usually means a higher price.
I personally think they want to squeeze as much as they can out of the fans... ;)
