First ten movies --theatrical version or director's cut?

For me:

TMP: Director's Edition. While the new effects do stand out a bit, they did go to some effort to at least attempt to make them look like visuals which could have been made in 79. I actually think they did a pretty good job. I half expect that people's objections to the CGI have a little bit more to do with their advanced knowledge of it being CGI than it actually being poorly done. While it does run longer, I think the pacing is much improved.

TWOK: I do think that the added dialogue it well written, but, I feel that the actual acting of those lines is poorly done. I have no objection to Peter Preston being Scotty's nephew (though I also agree that the scene is stronger the other way) but the reading of the "blind as a Tiberian bat" line make me cringe every single time. Same with the extra material on Regula I. And, honestly, Alley's alternate readings don't do it for me either. I think it's fun to see for it's academic value as an alternate cut, but I do think the theatrical version is the better one.

TUC: To tell the truth, I only ever saw the theatrical version one time. I was eleven. It was in the theater. For decades I grew up with the VHS copy of what I guess was an extended version complete with the Colonel West business. I always felt the Scooby-doo ending was dumb and I'm glad there was an earlier version (which I have forgotten) which excludes it. The other cut with the flashbacks during the mind meld, much like the Tiberian bat line, makes me cringe. If you've been paying attention to the movie, you bloody well ought to already know who at least Admiral Cartwright and General Chang are. Whether or not you remember Nanclus is not real relevant. I would tentatively recommend the original home video release, but now I know that there was a different theatrical release, I want to go see that one again...

Does anyone know if there are any plans to have the Director's cut released on a SINGLE disc (DVD or Blu-Ray)?

Director's Cut of what? TMP? A two-disc DVD version already exists. One disc is the film, the other with the special features.

And a Blu-ray Disc version of the Director's Edition won't happen unless Paramount decides it's worth the money to dig up the assets and pay to have them re-rendered at a higher resolution.

Which is to say that it's very highly unlikely.

No, a Director's Cut, just the DVD itself of the first 10 movies. I would like to see more movies released that do not have all these extra discs. The extras are nice, but they take up too much space.

A director's cut of each of the first 12 movies? Your question is still kinda murky.

Paramount hasn't released movie-only editions of the films since the initial run of DVDs in the late 90's that pre-dated the 2-disc sets. I prefer having the special features, makes it feel like my cash is going further.

To begin, there are only Director's Cuts of 1, 2 and 6.

Second, there's always a chance they could repackage them. OR you can repackage them. You can either buy slim DVD/Blu-Ray cases OR you can just toss the spare disc if you feel that strongly on the issue. Either way, you can make or download some custom cover art for the films.

I saw the directors cut of The Voyage Home many years ago on VHS. I would enjoy seeing that again on Blu-Ray, but I doubt that will happen.

I see many people commenting on how they like the special effects in the director's cut. They're nice, but they kind of throw me off when I'm looking at a 1970's film with newer special effects.

It's true. They tried to simulate a 1979 look with film grain, but in certain shots it is quite obvious that we are looking at CGI, notably in the shot of the landing party exiting the exterior of the Enterprise saucer, and the shot of the entire V'Ger vessel as it approaches earth.

That was actually a Director's Signature Edition, or some such marketing ploy like that. It was the same theatrical cut of the film, just with new video pieces filmed with Leonard Nimoy.

Oh, ok. I was like 10 years old so I thought differently.

Director's cuts for all 3.

Those 3 movies are the only Blu-ray Trek releases that I do not own on Blu-ray.
Everything else that has been released on Blu-ray----
TOS, Ent, TNG and movies 3-5, 7-12 I bought.

I think the only new thing we'll get from Trek on Blu-ray in 2016 is the Animated series---and I will buy it.

I have bought Treks 1,2 and 6 maybe 5-8 times apiece and I'm certainly not buying them again without the other versions being included.
Putting the SLV on the current TMP Blu-ray would have been easy. They didn't care. Now we may never see the added scenes in Hi-def at all.

I'm hoping we get TAS on Blu-ray in 2016. Though I imagine Star Trek Beyond will also be released late in the year. :techman:

I must admit I haven't seen the TMP special longer version since I was about eight years old.

Isn't that the one with the unfinished effects shots?

I'm curious as to how that version compares to the theatrical and director's cuts. Does it add anything positive that is lacking in the other versions?

There are a few lines from the SLV that I wish had made it to the DC---"a crew of a thousand ten miles tall"---"we all create god in our own image"---"we are now discussing the subject of command fitness"---etc.

The unfinished FX were just the one scene where Kirk leaves the airlock--in the wrong space suit.
Leave out or finish that one scene and the SLV is an ok watch if you have time.

I have to go with Director's Cut for TMP and TWOK, and theatrical release of TUC. TUC was sketchy enough before the director had his final say.

For me, I've only seen the director's cut Of TMP so far but I must say I was extremely impressed having only seen the theatrical version on VHS back in the day.

I've still to see the others but will do!

Down here, SBS 2 is about to show nine Trek movies, one per week, presumably the hi-def theatrical versions.

(Only nine movies? The ad shows clips from TFF and INS, so I assume it is NEM which didn't make the cut. However, I didn't notice any clips from TUC, GEN or FC either, so who knows?)
