I can't imagine getting dressed up like that and going before a camera without being really blitzed. Then again he has been in some of those Syfy made movies...and probably making good money.
I'm really interested in how this plays out. If the embargo is strictly on Jordan-Lantern and not on "Green Lantern" as a whole, this could set a precedent for, if there is a season ten, a Gardner or Stewart Lantern.

Obviously more than just legalities informed Johns choice of characters. It would have been impossible to give proper screen time to more than 3 JSA members in full roles. Not to mention the JLA characters and regular Smallville cast. Plus the budgetary issues of having so many guest stars.
I think Hawkman was a perfect choice. In the comics Geoff Johns has made Carter Hall the definitive version of the character. He was also the ambassador between the JSA and the JLA in the revised continuity. Retconned so that its Carter Hall in all the Silver Age JLA comics.
Usually the Golden Age and Silver Age versions of Hawkman were visually the same. Anyone who has a vague awareness of him from Super Friends or his Super Powers figure will still recognize him. Which would not have been the case the Golden Age Flash or Green Lantern. "Hey why is the Flash wearing that helmet???" or "Hey why does Green Lantern have a cape?" or maybe even fans of the JLU cartoons wondering "I thought GL was a Black guy!!!!"
That could be a definite possibilty. When the creators of "The Flash" TV series filmed their pilot for a Justice League series, the used Guy Gardner (even if he looked and acted like Hal Jordan). I believe this is also one of the reasons they initially went with John Stewart as the Green Lantern on the cartoon version of "Justice League" ( the other being to make the crew a bit more racially diverse). That'd be kind of awesome, especially if they could get Johns to write that one, too.
FYI The creators of "The Flash" television series had no involvement in that cheesy, sitcom styled Justice League pilot made many years later.
^^^I just checked Imdb and by Golly, you're right. Huh. For years, I thought Paul De Meo and Danny Bilson were behind that project. Could it be that they were part of another JLA project that never got off the ground? At any rate, thanks for clearing that up. Other than that, though, I stand by my post on the subject and agree with your characterization of the finished product.
But Alan Scott only think's he's a Green Lantern. If he showed up on Oa one afternoon and tried to get backpay from the Guardians of the Universe for countlessly saving the day, well, he'd be shit out of luck.
Besides, just call Alan "Sentinel" again, and you've loop holed the bloke right back into the script.
Honestly I don't think that even Guy Gardner at his eighiest could make Smallville's Clark seem comparatively full of either grace or tact.

I'm still surprised that DC hasn't retconned Alan Scott to give him some kind of connection to the Guardians and the Green Lantern Corps.
His power comes from the magic the Guardians banished from the Universe.

Perhaps, but I'd rather have an actor who looks fairly fit than a muscle-bound lump filling any movie or TV superhero shoes. I, sadly, do not know Mr. Shanks' work but from all the positive buzz about this choice, I'm looking forward to the ep.
While I don't expect every superhero to be muscle-bound, in print Hawkman has consistently been portrayed as one of the physically largest heroes in the DC universe, so I'd expect him to be more than "fairly fit".
