From Star Trek, though Galaxy Quest, to Abrams Trek...
If anyone really wants to look at poo, it's in here, but the comparison breaks down at this point
(Explanation of the last one: I happen to like the Protector, and Galaxy Quest in general; also, the comparison breaks down at this point, because the new ship is nothing but crap in the rough shape of the Enterprise, with no apparent influence from the Protector at all, unlike the props, so...)
I'm not sure what your point is with this post, but since the GQ and STXI stuff are both "TOS updated", they do look similar naturally.

The visual comparisons are utter nonsense. The GQ props are arbitrarily jammed in there to no effect.
I can do the same thing substituting phasers from "Star Trek III: The Search For Spock" for the "Galaxy Quest" gun and demonstrate the same similarities.
And the "vox?" Because it has a flat circular detail with a Tesla effect it resembles a transparent dome with dark blue sparkles/mottling or whatever? Gee, I notice that the TOS communicator itself had a flat circular "speaker" with some chintzy op-art detail. Give me a fucking break.
There's no resemblance between that GQ tracker thing and the tricorders on either side beyond being box-shaped (and having a strap like the TOS tricorder). Try sticking an early TNG tricorder in there instead of the GQ prop and you'll get a lot closer to something that someone other than the very credulous might actually believe.

Fun fact: Paramount once had Ebay pull an auction of a replica GQ Nebulizer because they claimed in infringed on their copyright for Trek phaser design. So all his complaining is nonsense anyway; of course phasers and the GQ version look alike. They're supposed to! Even the studio thinks so!

Notice several significant details in the ST III phaser that are a closer match for the new phaser than anything about the GQ nebulizer: the "hood" that extends forward over the top of the emitter nozzle for one, but more significantly the handle which is virtually identical down to the assymetric base (the ST III phaser is shown here reversed).
Much, much closer. "Galaxy Quest" props need not apply - despite the fact that it messes up some pet theories.
The nebulizer is, very simply, a deliberate imitation of the look of the TOS phaser. So is the ST III phaser, although it adds a few details that actually do carry forward to the Abrams phaser - which the GQ prop does not.

I agree, they aren't really fair comparisons at all. The GQ tricorder and communicators have no resemblance aside in a very VERY basic "they do the same thing" way. Putting the TNG tricorder in there would be closer.
The phasers look similar, but closer to the STIII phaser than anything else, as you say.
Yeah, the phasers look similar because the nebulizer is designed with many specific references to a TOS phaser.

The middle section of the phaser body (top to bottom) looks like the original series phaser body is embedded in there.
Also on the pic of the toy you have to take into account the fact it's on a
crappy '80's green' back drop of some kind. That top plastic part looks to be
clear and probably looks alot better without the disgusting green hue.

Interesting - there's a detail that looks like the profile of a knurled wheel on top of the phaser at just about the place that a knurled wheel appears on the TOS phaser...

Yet that (possibly rotating?) piece seems very familiar, somehow; I've seen it before. It reminds me of a toy, or a prop from a show, or something from years ago, perhaps almost as far back as TOS. Wish toA newer, better pic of the phaser has come to light:

That is very slick. I like that is looks more functional, less stylized, than the various props shown, IMO.
Perhaps the "safety" switch and the "recoil-absorber" features. The top view rear could be less square, perhaps.
Agreed. Too frickin silly if you ask me. I wonder how many redshirts will accidentally vaporize themselves when the phaser malfunctions and shoots out of the rear facing nozzle instead of the forward facing one!
