First new Total Recall image

I loved Arnie and his movies growing up, my absoulte favorites, the first thing I ever recorded with our first VCR was The Terminator. I'm not opposed to this remake per se but it's going to be absolutely surreal to see a recreation of something so ingrained in me from my youth.

Why was the first movie necessary?
Amen to that. I don't really think We Can Remember It For You Wholesale has enough material for a movie, and to cut down on the baffling weirdness of the piece in favour of just doing a dumb action movie with some winks at the audience isn't much of anything.

But I don't really expect it to improve on the low bar the Verhoeven film set.

I've never read PKD's original story, so I can't comment on that. I'm just tired of everybody treating the first movie like it's some sacred thing and acting like this new movie (which is not a remake, but a completely different adaptation of the original story) is some form of heresy.

The new Conan movie has been treated in a very similar manner, and for similar (and equally idiotic) reasons. If neither the first Total Recall or Conan the Barbarian had starred Arnold Schwarzenegger, nobody today would be whining so much about how "unnecessary" these new movies are.

I like the original story.

I don't like Total Recall.

It's probably too early to make any kind of judgement, but I'd guess that the new film owes more to the Arnold flick than the Dick story... because it looks like it's a, you know, action movie, and there's not a lot of action in the story.

I'm just more peeved that this is really the new PKD film in the works. Not 'some pretentious indie director tackles Ubik' or 'Paul Giamatti plays Philip K. in biopic'.

No, let's go back to the well of using PKD's literature as a wraparound device for explosions.

Maybe it'll be good, sure. In fairness The Adjustment Bureau was good. I just know the kind movie I'd rather.

Hey, at least Jason Momoa has black hair. That's one advantage he has over Arnold (that and his tour de force as Khal Drogo).

I agree, total recall is NOT WORTHY of a remake. Hollywood is desperate, as we can see from the upcoming "battleship" movie and the proposed rock'em sock'em robots movie...

It was fun to watch when I was young and Arnie was my hero....and colin farrell? sorry, half that movies appeal was watching arnie kick ass

I loved Total Recall! Shocked so many here didnt like it.

This remake sounds boring. The whole Mars thing is what made the movie so interesting.

Quite. The original was a decent Arnie action flick. Nothing more.

That said, I don't really see much of the appeal of spinning a new action movie out of We Can Remember it for you Wholesale. I'd rather somebody do something with Ubik, or find some way of tackling The Man in the High Castle.

The idea that The Man in the High Castle should be made into a movie is so old that Phil talks about having sold the film rights in the semi-autobiographical novel Valis... so obviously nothing has come of that.

And just to shoot into the breeze, We Can Remember It For You Wholesale would make a great short film. There's not enough material in it for a feature film, but a twenty minute little head-scratcher? Sure why not. I do love the story's final twist, which I really doubt will make its way into this new Recall film.

What about Ubik?

I read that a long, long time ago, and I don't remember it very well. Mostly I just remember it seeming pretty strange.

Something about the characters being dead, and not realizing it? And little advertisements for Ubik at the beginning of each chapter?

What about Ubik?
Richard Linklater was originally going to make a film about Ubik before he opted for A Scanner Darkly instead. I remember vaguely hearing something about Dick's daughter fishing around for some talent for an Ubik film and then... nothing.

One hears these random twitterings occasionally. I still remember reading back when someone actually bought the film rights to Valis, which seems a little insane.

Considering the combination of fidelity and inventiveness in Linklaiter's version of A Scanner Darkly, I'd love to see him do further PK Dick films. Since the movie bombed, though, I doubt anything like that will ever happen.

I love the original Total Recall. I saw it at least five or ten times with my dad back in the summer of 1990. There's a part of me that's like, "Why remake it? It just came ou-", then I remember it came out 21 years ago. A bloody lifetime. But it seems like yesterday to me.

I can't help but wonder if people are having a hard time with the idea of a remake because it's a reminder that they aren't young kids anymore. That's my problem anyway. I know some folks just plain didn't like the Ah-nuld version and that's cool too.

So long as it's not a slavish copy of the first film, I think it'll be worth watching.

I think many people have soft spot for Total lRecall, without being blind to its many and obvious flaws.
