First looks at Jason Momoa as Conan...

In fact, I'm already hoping for a sequel, and a return of a character even better than Conan: Red Sonja (who was largely created by the comic series). But this time, please cast an actual actress in the role. Jennifer Lawrence wouldn't be a bad idea.
The producers want to put Red Sonja in her own film - and perhaps that's the only way they can approach it because of the rights issues mentioned above. They want Amber Heard to star in the film if it comes together.

What did you guys think of the idea of the Rose McGowan/ Robert Rodriguez Red Sonya? I was curious because I like those two, but I'm wondering what someone who knows the character thinks.

Hmm. Rose McGowan is definitely too petite and I don't know that Amber Heard is Amazonian enough, but Hollywood doesn't really generate actresses with the right body type to be convincing as a woman warrior so I'll settle for someone tall.

Too bad if Conan and Red Sonja can't play in the same sandbox. They could play very well off each other as characters, give the right casting.

I have all three volumes recently published by Del Rey (The Coming of Conan the Cimmerian, The Bloody Crown of Conan, and The Conquering Sword of Conan) a few years ago. I was always somewhat interested in Conan before then, but those collections are what really made me a fan.
I have The Coming of Conan on my Nook wishlist. And when I start doing Dark Horse digital comics, I plan on DLing some of their Conan comics.

Ah-nold was the poor imitation of Conan. :rommie:

Pah, where would Conan be without Arnold?

You apparently don't realize that Conan was popular and well-known before Ah-nold was even born. :rommie: Mr. The Barbarian made his debut in 1932. I know the character chiefly from the excellent comic book series that began in the 70s. He's like Sherlock Holmes, a very flexible character who has been worked and reworked over the decades, becoming richer and more fascinating over time.

Done correctly, Conan should be a lot like LOTR, a fully-fledged believable alternate reality, with resonances of Earth culture (with Conan encompassing much more world culture than insular LOTR) and of course a whooooole lot more sex and violence. If you'd only seen the movies, you might not realize that Conan has an actual personality. He's not just some hulking monosyllabic brute. He's intelligent and funny, and has his own sense of morality and personal honor that stands in stark contrast to the dissolute "civilized" world. In particular, he finds magic repugnant, probably because it's dishonorable and "cheating," and also a nuisance that he can't hack up with an axe.

In light of that, the movies from the 80s are a big disappointment that don't even come close to capturing the full scale of what the story deserves. Maybe this version won't either, but I'm hoping they will.

See, the basic logic is: say Star Trek, and people react with "Captain Kirk!" or "Beam me up, Scotty!". Say Conan, and people either think of Conan O'Brian, or Schwarzenegger.

Let's be honest. They think of Conan O'Brien. ;) (As I found out when, silly me, I tried to find info for this thread by googling "Conan" by itself.)

A better analogy is when you say "Kirk," people thought of Shatner. Thought, past tense. These things can be changed, and de-linking Shatner from Kirk is a tougher job than de-linking Ah-nold from a role that is somewhere down the notoriety list below the Terminator, the pregnant guy and Danny DeVito's twin brother.

I've read some comics that adapted Howard stories but never the stories themselves. Today at the Borders closing sale I got vol.1 of a collection of Howard Conan tales. At 60% off it was a no brainer. I look forward to reading them.
Which collection did you get? Ballentine has been putting out some good collections, as has Bison Books.
The first collection from Del Rey: The Coming of Conan the Cimmerian.
Includes in order:
-Cimmeria
-Phoenix on the Sword
-The Frost Giant's Daughter
-The God in the Bowl
-The Tower of the Elephant
-The Scarlet Citadel
...among others

Is the movie going to be after the two Conan movies chronologically?

Between 1 and 2 ?

Or its irrelevant?

Is this based on a novel or a short story?

When Arnold played Conan, he was 6'2" and 235-240 lbs. Mamoa is 6'4" and 220 lbs in this role. He certainly doesn't look as stocky as Schwarzenegger did, but the idea that he's "too small" for the role is stretching it a bit. The comic does draw him more like the bodybuilder type, but Jason looks like he has more of a "real" fighter's build, and the giant, muscle-bound, action movie star died off about 20 years ago anyway.

Part of Arnie's charm on screen in the early 80s was how big he was, but the same kind of reaction is impossible to replicate with an audience in 2011.

^ It does, too bad there most likely won't be one. Novelizations seem to have gone by the way side over the last couple years. I'm assuming it has to do with the recession.

This is the newest poster released for the film....

...just a little over a week after the first poster.

now the new poster where he's standing on all the skull is awesome reminds me of a warhammer cover very cool. looking like a great movie. why would a fantasy movie be in 3d?

They've already posted pics from at least one or 2 scenes with female nudity on ComingSoon.com, so I doubt it.

No, I think it is actually rated R. But I could be wrong, the studio could always panic and make a PG-13 cut. But I hope they stick with R.
