First installment of The Adventure Games released!

Well, I'm glad everyone else can get in... alas, I can't do anything once the game loads - my mouse cursor has vanished, and alt-tabbing out of the game makes it appear in the centre of the screen, only to vanish again when I alt-tab back in! I've tried reinstalling with no effect.

Oh, and when I try to send a bug report, I get a text file saying that no e-mail has been sent because a directory couldn't be found, or something like that! So I can't even request official help!

Anyone got any suggestions?

OPERATING SYSTEM: Windows Vista, Service Pack 1, 32-bit
MEMORY: 4GB
BROWSER: Firefox
GRAPHICS CARD: ATI Radeon HD 3600 series
CPU: Quad-core (so should definitely be good enough)
MOUSE: Microsoft mouse

That's very close to what I'm running except I have SP2 and an Nvidia 9800 card. While I was able to get it to go the game is definitely "flaky".

The game was pretty good; it's a great way to spend an hour and a half or so. I found it was pretty easy - I didn't get stuck anywhere. You can always talk to Amy, and she'll tell you what to do next. The graphics were a little weird in places- for example: when you use the sonic screwdriver, the Doctor has to move to the correct spot exactly in front of the object before he starts. So when you use it, the character's model kind of forces itself over to that spot and the animation starts. Did it bother me? Not really because for once we have a kick ass Doctor Who game!

Try lowering your resolution.

The latter is part of its region checking (not that it makes it any less rubbish).

I did manage to get it installed on my laptop (Using the same network connection) - but my laptop isn't really powerful enough. It does start, take an age to get through the BBC screen - and then promptly crashes. When I can be bothered, I'll probably try again on my DT at some point.

For the record, that's a Win7 (64) machine with 8gb memory, ATI 5850 (Black) 1GB graphics card and AMD dual core processor running at 3.0GHz

My laptop is XP-sp3 with only a Dual core 1.6 GHz processor and ATI X1300 graphics. Can't remember the memory, but I did upgrade it from when I got it so it's probably 2 or 3 Gig.

Try lowering your resolution.

Didn't work, but I think safe mode is working.

EDIT: Nope - got into the game, now I can't stop him running even when nothing's being pressed or clicked!

EDIT 2: Got it working, but now I can't beat that third level of the match-the-symbols game! With my eyesight, it takes me a moment to look at each symbol and see what it is... is there any way to slow it down?

Well installed it Friday but it was tonight before I could try to play. Runs veeeeerrrry slowly, the voice track seems out of sync with the pictures. Obviously my 18 month old laptop isn't up to the job. Annoying since the developers said they'd tested it on really old PCs.

Re: No free DW games for outside the UK

This will surprise no one -- the first of the Doctor Who Adventure Games computer games has been released a few days earlier than scheduled.

If you're in the UK.

If you're a heathen living outside the UK, you get a message saying the game will be "available for purchase" sometime in July.

Gee, wasn't I predicting the BBC would screw us over - again?

And there we are. Stop whining. ;)

No, I can't -- because the bastards are only making the WINDOWS version available. Not the Mac version. :scream::scream::scream::scream:

Alex

Am I reading that right, you have put into question the parentage of the creators of a simple and in my opinion, not that good a computer game into question because you own a MAC and you won't get to play it. Get some damned perspective on the situation and as The has said, stop whining.

You know, sometimes the only way to respond to stupidity is through laughter. I was going to tell you to fuck off, but why bother. I'll just laugh at you instead and just remember to use Comic Book Guy's voice from now on whenever I read your posts. You and that guy who goes Glenn Beck on me whenever I drop "The" off the title Bionic Woman on the SF/F board are examples of why outsiders laugh at SF geeks.

I'm a Doctor Who fan who has been waiting for this game. I have heard plenty of positive comments. Plus Moffat has said the games are canon. I can't really spell it out any simpler than that.

And if the word bastard offends you grow up and join the year 2010.

I've played the game, it was ok, nothing special, certainly not worth all the threads you've created or commented in regarding the fact you're unable to play it.

You are aware that with out the BBC Licence fee, Doctor Who would not have returned in 2005 like it did, if ITV or Sky got hold of it, it would have been below par television, something akin to the Prachet adaptations Sky have done or Primeval on ITV.

You will get the game at somepoint but don't forget, British viewers have "first dibs" on these as we pay for the fucking thing and you have no right to put into question the parentage of the people paid for with the Licence Fee to develop them as they are being paid out of my pocket and all the other posters in here who pay a Licence Fee.

Just a bit of clarification on the price. While that link says it will be 7 bucks for the two, the download site is currently listing the bundle for only $3.70! It says it's including City of the Daleks for free.

I guess $3.70 was an introductory price as it set me back $4.95. Still its not bad for a $5 game.

I guess they fixed some of the bugs as the only hitch I encountered was a clunky installation. The progress bar seemed to stop just short 0f 100%. After a few minutes I just said sod it, went into the directory and clicked the game icon to get started. After that it ran just fine on high detail, even on my three year old system.

Quickie spoiler free review.

The Story: Both were well told and kept my interest. They'd have made epic stories on the show. Definitely worth the price of admission.

Voice acting: Overall very good, though Matt's performance was very laid back. No sign of his usual energy and jumping around. Amy's non-stop snarkiness does get a bit old after a bit. However she makes herself indispensable more than once.

Game play: As someone mentioned above, it was pretty simple. Run about fetching objects to complete tasks while dodging monsters. They throw in the occasional minigame to accomplish things like removing an electronic gizmo from a machine, rewiring a circuit board, or reprogramming a computer. Not much of a challenge for the experienced gamer, which is understandable since they'd want to keep it manageable for the average young fan. Still, its a fun casual game.
Movement can be a little clunky, and you'll occasionally get hung up on some tiny obstruction if you're in a hurry. But nothing game-killing.
A couple of scene transitions were a bit clunky. Very abrupt like a film missing a few frames. Also in a couple of scens changes someone would start to speak, but then be cut off, only to continue the scene a moment later. Like there was a problem with scene branching. This only happened with the first part though.

Graphics: Pretty dated by todays standards. I didn't really see much sign of the motion capture they went on about during one of the DW Confidentials. Not much in the way of facial expressions, and they even cheated a bit, using the same character models for both games (you've got Amy running around in the snow in shorts. wtf?). I defiantly thought he graphics in part two were much improved, with some nicely rendered ice caves.
Theres a gimmick where you get to collect virtual character trading cards hidden about the landscape, which is stupid, but kinda fun. They even made an attempt at making the game educational, with certain fact files on certain click able objects, giving little one paragraph explanations of Nanotechnology for example.

Audio: Very well done. Great sound effects, and a nice selection of music culled from past Murry Gold scores. The background music never fails to set the mood.

Its all terribly linear, and not liable to impress the average HL2, MW2, or Left 4 Dead player, but then its not meant to compete. Its a free downloadable game after all.

Its definitely a great first effort, and certainly worth the $5 price of admission.

I can only hope that with the success of this, the BBC will consider taking a shot at a proper full length game with modern graphics, surround sound, etc.
