First installment of The Adventure Games released!

Re: No free DW games for outside the UK

My understanding is that the game was designed to play on even really old PCs so I'm guessing the same would apply to Macs.

Re: No free DW games for outside the UK

So for all the UKers out there who have downloaded and played the game...is it worth paying for?

This forum page includes a review and screenshots. Scroll down for detailed system requirements. Looks like it's an Intel game, requiring 2Gb of hard drive space (no reference to actual OS requirements). There's also considerable detail regarding Windows requirements.

(I know posting other forum links might be a bit of a no-no, but as this is the first and only source I have been able to find for system requirements, I think it's important information to have. It's easy to ignore the replies and the original post here makes no reference to things like "creative options".)

Re: No free DW games for outside the UK

when it comes to non UK downloading the games, I am surprised that BBC Am, can not buy a US licence for the game, and host it on its website.

Same could happen for alot of UK & US web content.

Well I was just going on the makers saying they'd specifically tested it on the oldest, crappest PCs the BBC had (they seemed to imply this was a lot of them!)

Is it worth paying for, well having a TV licence means i already paid for it whether i want it or not, a better question would be do i thing the TV licence fee used to make the game as well spent...yes, yes i do, for once i think the licence fee money that was spent on funding this game was well used.

So if you've downloaded and played the game, would you have still done so if you had to pay for it outright? I'm just trying to gauge whether or not the game itself is good enough to directly pay for...

As a single episode, probably not, unless they go for iTunes level prices of say $2 per episode. However, as we're getting four episodes this year, I'd say they will wait and make the price apply to a download of all four. That'll give you 4-5 hours of gameplay.

Re: No free DW games for outside the UK

But the advance publicity -- including reports by BBC America and other sources -- gave the strong impression that the games would be available for free everywhere. There was also no indication that this was a "licence fee" situation - I thought I even saw a reference to sponsorship, though that was probably an error just like the reports the games would be available internationally.

I distinctly remember the advance publicity making it clear that Doctor Who: The Adventure Games would be available for free to those in the United Kingdom, but not elsewhere.

The second thing is if we're going to be asked to pay $20, $30 for a game that people report completing in a single sitting, where's the point in that? Even $5, $10 is too much.

Bear in mind that, as ever, this is a game that young children need to be able to play and complete as well as adults.

It's frustration over lack of clarification that is at the heart of my comment about the BBC screwing us over. The BBC should have indicated back in April that this would be a UK-only release.

They did.

They should already be telling us how much the international version is going to cost. As it is, I really have no idea if the game will even play on my Mac when (and if) the Mac version is made available internationally as I can't seem to find any system requirement information -- there's probably some on the download page, but the Internet's built-in censorship function sends us to that non-UK page.

No, they don't have any obligation to be telling us how much the international version is going to cost. The BBC has absolutely no obligation to anybody who does not pay the television license, and certainly has no obligations to someone who is not British, does not live in the United Kingdom, and does not pay a television license.

Re: No free DW games for outside the UK

I can see this ending up as a DVD or CDROM for purchase through Entertainment Earth for those outside the UK who want to purchase it and do not want to download it..

I am wondering if this will eventually end up on those torrents network of sites for download, seing as how most of everything else does..

not that I advocate that sort of thing..

Or condemn it either...

Re: No free DW games for outside the UK

I don't know why people outside the UK are complaining about not getting the game for free. As others have stated in the UK they pay a license free which funds the BBC. The game is more or less a little thank you to them for funding the show as well as being paid for buy the fee. Thats why they get it for free and we don't. We should be thankful that in July they are going to give us non-UK fans a chance to purchase it since we don't support the BBC by paying a license fee.

Remember even though we are fans of the show and buy books, DVDs, and other merchandise as far as the BBC and the show's production staff are concerned only the license paying UK fans count not us. I remember reading somewhere during a Q&A after a screening of "The Eleventh Hour" in Canada Moffat was asked what he thought about their opinions and he pretty much told them he didn't care because the show is made for the UK audience not them. This isn't anything new though as shows with a worldwide fanbase usualy only cater to the fans in there country of origin.

Re: No free DW games for outside the UK

Sigh. I can see my arguments are falling on deaf ears. Fine. Fuck the games. They aren't important.

I'll end my contributions to the Doctor Who board by posting this link to the Doctor Who Information Network blog - this is the big Canadian fan club - which covers my arguments and those of others a lot better than I evidently have,

http://www.dwin.org/expressionengin...es_in_time_and_space_just_not_outside_the_uk/

"I've had enough of this crap" is the key phrase. If you want to be elitist, fine. It's your choice. The BBC is going to be out of business in a few years anyway and Syfy or Channel 5 or something will pick up production of Doctor Who and we won't have to be clusterfracking over this all time. I honestly hope it happens sooner or later. The BBC needs to join the 21st century, badly. As do, evidently, certain individuals on this board.

I think I'm finished on this BBS for awhile. This is the third time I've gotten pissed on for posting a thread in the last few days, which suggests the atmosphere here has soured. Have fun in the sandbox.

Re: No free DW games for outside the UK

Honestly, I always thought it was kind of bullshitty that games of that level were going to be free, anyway. It always seemed a little too good to be true. Especially since they were going to be cross-platform. And, look, I was right on both counts! Go me!

(It reminds me also of the recent irony I observed of "Steam" coming out for Mac and beginning a shining new era of a lion's share of top-shelf games being released at the same time as their PC counterparts. Naturally, this has been inaugurated with the release of several years-old games from the back-catalogue, in the worst traditions of us getting things after everyone else has forgotten about them. Not that I don't want them filling in the Mac roster older games at all, but, jeeze, couldn't they have saved the rollout for something that was new for everybody, like Portal 2?)
