Well I just watched the pilot and a few early episodes, and so far it has me pulled in-- but I don't particularly love any of the characters yet. So far they are all pretty much on edge (which is understandable given the Bajoran/Federation tensions). Sisko is a good character and I look forward to learning more about him, but we're missing a warm character at this point IMO. I also look forward to learning more about Odo.

Hmm...from what I recall, I'd say that either Jadzia Dax or Dr. Bashir would be the closest to a "warm" character in terms of their enthusiasm for where they are. Stick with it; all of the main cast begins to grow on you after a few episodes.

I just watched the pilot for the first time since it was originally broadcast, and I guess I didn't realize at the time (I was 12), but it is really terrific. Emissary is just wonderfully written, directed, and acted. I feel like it's a much better introduction than Farpoint, for sure.

I liked Sisko's edginess in the pilot (when he wheeled and dealed with Quark rather than being all Starfleety and prim and proper about it - actually he came pretty close to blackmailing Quark in that scene) and Kira really came across as interesting immediately but the character who really amazed me was Dukat. Yes, from the very start he was absolutely riveting. I knew he would be an excellent foil for Sisko.

I think all of the characters were pretty well defined on that first episode. After that, they mellowed nicely, too, getting more relaxed in their performances. What I liked about DS9 is that they didn't copy themselves. It was nice to see them going in a totally different direction. It would have been nice to see that in more Trek series. I also really liked the idea of the CO being a family man, and not having the rank of Captain. It showed some other dimensions that we hadn't seen before. I was a little disappointed when Sisko got promoted. I think it was cool having a commander being the C.O. I had heard that they toyed with the idea of promoting him to Admiral. That would have been awesome.
