First Contact uniforms

These comments seemed weird at first until I realized I was in the Voyager Forum :D
Nah, a Voyager stand alone movie. I wouldn't be much interested. Crossover yes.

I would have liked to have seen the uniforms cross over. It's only a frickin uniform to replicate.

Keeping the same uniform could also be looked at as an attempt (perhaps by Janeway) to maintain solidarity among her crew. From the start, she insisted that the Voyager's crew would be a united crew, a Starfleet one, and the initial Starfleet uniforms worn at the time at that decision may even have become a symbol of everything that crew had to endure and overcome during their voyage home.

7 years. I bet all kinds of protocol changed over that time and if she found out about it that would be very low on her priorities.

My idea. Late TNG uniforms for starships. DS9 uniform for stations. FC uniforms for security on those stations.

STII uniforms for Admirals, TMP uniforms for ground personnel.

There is no reason to waste replicator matter and energy just to keep up with the latest Alpha Quadrant fashions. Besides, Starfleet doesn't have a problem with mixing uniforms.

In the DS9 episode where The Sisko discovers B'Hala/Kasidy returns/Bajor almost enters the UFP (which is also the first appearance of the FC uniforms in DS9) there were extras in the background of the ward room wearing the TNG-style uniforms.

I'm happy that the Voyager crew never adapted the "First Contact" uniforms. They were simply drab compared to the DS9 and Voyager uniforms.

Maybe starfleet had better stuff to transmit to voyager other than new uniform patterns?

They were presumably already expending too much energy and resources replacing all those shuttles they kept losing... They couldn't very well cope with that and provide every member of the entire crew with a wardrobe make-over too.

A new slinky costume for Seven of Nine, to replace last year's new slinky costume... quite understandably remained a priority though!

Also lets say they returned in a few decades wearing these antiquated uniforms. It would make a better photo op than if they were all up to date.

It also occurs to me, production-wise, that Kate Mulgrew may not have been comfortable with the FC women's uniforms. They were pretty darned skin-tight, much moreso than the DS9 styled ones - just look at at promo pics of Crusher, Troi, or eigther Dax. Kate was still in fine form at the time of course, but I wonder if pouring her into one of those outfits every day would have been "satisfactory working conditions" for her. Of course, they could have simply made an FC style costume with the DS9 pattern and just changed the colours and fabrics.

Presumably, clothes still show wear and tear in the 24th century. Uniforms tear, things are spilled on them, paunches grows, officers are shot by the Vidian transporter/scanner/phaser, etc. Yet they weren't going to replace the uniforms because of energy use (let alone replace them with the current regulation design)?

ETA: Didn't most of the crew visit Fair Haven? Were they denied the opportunity to replicate period costume because of energy consumption?

Yes it was a great moment all round..

Because there's something fundamentally untrustworthy about a frenchman who acts so english.

They trusted him to run the flagship, and allowed him to stay in charge (with the same bridge crew for 15 years). He had 100% latitude in pretty much any decision. Admirals could not order him around, only request it.

Janeway was Peter Principled before Voyager even docked at Earth.

James T Kirk said:
Don't let them promote you. Don't let them transfer you. Don't let them do *anything* that takes you off the bridge of that ship, because while you're there... you can make a difference.

I chalk the uniform issue up to two directives by the showrunners:

1) Keep the old uniforms because it makes VOY distinct from DS9, and

2) The Voyager sets don't have much color to them, and the old unis were more colorful than the new ones. So the old unis make the crew stand out a bit more.

I think there were good arguments for and against adopting those.

Personally, I think they should have, especially once they had established the monthly data streams. I could see getting those new uniforms as a bit of a morale booster, the idea that they're now up to date with Starfleet in the Alpha Quadrant and they're getting closer to home.

I must disagree with the idea that the plans for them would have taken up any room in data streams, The Doctor observed them when he took his trip to the Prometheus and all they would have needed to do was to download his visual records to get them.

The other side of this is that the new uniforms were a bit drab, I disagree with this, but to each his/her own. Also that it allowed Voyager to retain its own identity while far from home, that's valid, I suppose.

Still think the Voyager crew would have looked good in the First Contact/DS9 uniforms as many photoshops have proven.
