FIRST BluRay

I take immaculate care of my discs. Some of them have been played exactly once. Maybe I need to return Blu-Ray player #2 and try for #3.

Were #1 & #2 the same brand / model? As NIUPonyBoy said certain brands consistently have DVD skip issues, I'd be insisting on another brand for #3.

My Oppo plays DVDs better than my Pioneer DVD player did, because it upscales them (the DVD player was fairly old).

The Oppo was an indulgence, but to my understanding most of the major brand Bluray players play DVDs perfectly. You can find online reviews for most of them.

Can anyone recommend a Blu-Ray player that's inexpensive around the $150 price range and can handle netflix? I've been thinking of upgrading to Blu-Ray for Star Trek TOS.

I've never had any trouble with NetFlix DVD's in my Sony BR player. In fact, the only thig that gives me problems is my TNG set. It is the cheap set, all 7 seasons in one box. I think the problem is with the DVD's. The manufacturing is very bad. You can see through the discs. I think it was an early batch for some new Chinese factory and they did not have the quality control of later runs. After searching the web I found a lot of people with the same problem. Sadly, it was months before I got around to watching the DVD's and my return time ran out.

Anyway, ST11 is GREAT on bRay. It is one of the few movies I have purchased on bRay.

I bought a Blu-Ray player specifically for Star Trek. It's fantastic.

Now for the bad news. Every "regular" DVD I play in the Blu-Ray player starts to freeze up and skip after about 10 minutes. I returned the player to the store and brought home a new one. Same deal, they freeze up and skip (but not in the same places). Should I return this one, or is this typical of Blu-Ray technology? All my Blu-Ray discs play just fine. The manual says the player is supposed to play all types of media (DVD, DVD-R, CD, etc).

All Blu-Ray players must be 100% backwards compatible with DVD. It's part of the BR spec. If you don't adhere to the spec, you don't get to call your box a Blu-Ray player.

As such, you've either got bad/scratched/dirty DVD's, or a defective player. Your player could be very sensitive to non-pristine DVD's. Try cleaning them off and trying again.
