Fireworks

I saw the DC display from a hill under Fort Myer with a couple of girls. It was pretty impressive.

We were supposed to be actually in the fort, but the police had blocked off the road, so we pulled onto the grass on the side of I-66 with the other thousand cars and just found a clear spot.

They're illegal here in Huntington Beach (Southern California), but we drive to my grandparent's house in Garden Grove (where it's legal) which is twenty minutes away and blow shit up in the spirit of freedom or whatever. It's what the Founding Fathers would have wanted.

We also watched the Disneyland fireworks show from the roof (it's only a couple miles away so you get a great view). This one was recorded two day earlier, but it's better quality then the other YouTube videos of it and the show was essentially the same except for not being able to hear the music and the cheesy pseudo-Charlton Heston narration:

Illegal in the nanny state of Mass. I couldn't make it to NH and my mother wouldn't buy them and bring them down (but she'll buy booze for my alcoholic brother, go figure).

So I had someone get some from RI, the plantation state. They don't fly but "emit a shower of spark and bangs." Even the kids weren't impressed. Good thing about a dozen people in the neighborhood had some real fireworks.

Had a blast last night, besides the normal little fireworks and mortars, my cousin had a potato cannon and a bottle rocket gun that he made. Awesome.

Speaking of fireworks, who pays for them? The city? From taxes?

Speaking for the city of Dubuque, Iowa, the annual Fireworks & Air Show celebration is put on by Radio Dubuque and the Dubuque Jaycees. Our fireworks show costs about $1,100 a minute and generally runs about 35 - 37 minutes. The air show runs a shade under two hours and costs differ, depending on which planes we get (though this year was pretty big: three P-51 Mustangs, a B-1, a Chinook, the Golden Knights, an A-10, an F-16 and some others that I forget).

The Jaycees, in addition to coordinating all the parking, contribute about $7,000 to the costs. I'm not sure what Radio Dubuque's exact monetary contribution is, but we had 33 corporate sponsors for this year's celebration, as well.

I don't always see the point of fireworks. Sure they are beautiful, but they scare little kids and dogs etc.. Im glad it's only allowed here on newyears eve.

Luckily in the state I live in fireworks are not banned(unless there hasn't been lots of rain in a while and it's really dry). And my 4th of July tradition is going to the baseball game and enjoying the fireworks there. They're usually pretty spectacular displays as well. but the parking lot is a bitch to get out of cause of the crowds of people that gather, and mostly not for a baseball game!

I honestly don't enjoy fireworks. If you've seen one, you've seen 'em all, and I have better things to do with my time than watch them.
