I'm not sure what the difference is between 5 and 6 to be honest, other than again losing from add ons. Anyone remember when Firefox was the go to browser? Doesn't seem that way anymore.
Pepperidge Farm remembers.
Anyhoo, yeah, I remember when Firefox was the solution to buggy and slow browsing. Now it's become bloated in and of itself (with or without add-ons), and with the recent change to the version system, I'm getting more and more frustrated as it always pushes for me to upgrade to 6. I did that once, hated it, moved back to 5, and now it won't stop bugging me.
I alternate between Firefox and Chrome, and I'd stick with Chrome exclusively, but it has it's own issues to work out, like not making my bookmarks button disappear, and having extensions that don't quite scratch the right itch.
Even tonight I'm reminded of the fact that Firefox just isn't what it once was. I had made a long post right before the 4 AM maintenance schedule, and hit submit. Well, I must have missed it by seconds, but the board had already gone into maintenance mode. "No worries", I thought to myself, "I'll just hit the back button and wait until the board's back up before submitting again."
No dice. None of my text was there. In older versions, the text would still be there if I hit the back button, but in FF5, it just removes it all and doesn't remember any of it. That is frustrating. So I had to retype everything out in wordpad. Firefox has been getting increasingly unstable with each release. I have no doubt it's because they're pushing out new versions every few months, and instead of working on a solid, stable product, they're aiming for new features. Well, that's great, but what the hell's the point of a new feature if the damn browser won't stay stable long enough to effectively use it?
A new browser will come along, and knock Firefox off it's perch. That's the way of things, but who will it be? Chrome? I don't know if Google's even on the same planet as we are anymore. Internet Explorer? ...nah. Opera? Maybe, if they can get out of the niche environment they're in. There are also lots of microbrowsers, but whether they'll come up with something or not, we'll have to wait and see. Until then, Firefox is bugging the piss out of me.
