Firefox 5 ?

Anyone upgrade to Firefox 5 yet? I just saw the notification in the corner.

Seems like a pretty big jump so soon after 4.

Ever since I went to 4.xxx, I've found it to be much slower than any previous version.

To make matters worse, I just upgraded to IE9, and that's faster than Firefox now (faster than 4 at least).

I've always been a Firefox/Netscape guy. Never really liked IE, but it seems the roles have reversed.

I do use Chrome at work, to view the ABC player. It has somewhat less trouble with it than FFx.

I'm using Firefox 5 and didn't know it, so yes. And yes, it's slow.
It almost feels bloated and heavy.

It's not a big jump, and it's not supposed to be.

Mozilla has switched to a quick-release cycle, like Chrome. They've decided to keep the old way of labelling releases.

Essentially, they're no longer distinguishing between major and minor releases. A release is a release, incorporating whatever happens to be done at the moment.

Well, they still have a bag of things they'd like to have for the next release, but they'll no longer delay a release if something they'd hope to have done is not done.

I upgraded and I like it... but I upgraded from Firefox 3.6, so I'm noticing differences.

I wish they wouldn't do that, changing the idea behind version numbers.

A full number has always been a major jump, all the way back to DOS days.

So it's basically the same as 4, which I agree, has felt more bloated & sluggish than 3 and is even slow to launch on both home & work machines.

I'm about ready to move over to Chrome. I didn't and don't want this update. I've used Chrome before and I liked it, but stayed with FF out of a sense of loyalty, but if I can't use a browser, what good is it?

I hate to say it, but have you tried IE9?

If you're not an IE hater like me, it seems like a major improvement over 8.

Chrome is a little too stripped down for me at times, but is much faster & lighter. Firefox had a nice balance in the 2.0 & 3.0 days.

I can't stand IE. Every new incarnation, I give it a shot just so I can be informed as to whether it's improved or the same, and it never fails to disappoint. Since I deal with networking and security on a daily basis, I have become very wary of Microsoft's promises when it comes to Internet Explorer. I stopped being a fan of IE around IE 6. I don't see that changing.

Anyhoo, I have switched to Chrome (12.x.x), found some great extensions, and sweet Jebus, it's become a lot leaner and faster since I last used it!

I wish Freecorder worked properly with Chrome. That's my main add-on, other than ad-blocker & no-script.

If I open it from the Start menu, it works, but shows weird titles for the videos and there's no toolbar for it in Chrome.

Ah. Yeah, I don't use enough extensions to make a difference. I can understand where someone needs many extensions, or more specialized ones.

I switched to Chrome pretty much full-time when FF was at around version 3.5, I think. I found then it was starting to get bloated and unwieldy, so Chrome's fast, lightweight approach was super-appealing. I haven't looked back, though I keep an an older version of FF (3.0.19) on my computer for compatibility purposes. And from what people are saying, it seems I made the right call.

Yep. I do have several extensions now.
Aside from the obvious ones, I also have a Bookmarks button, a video download extension, and the Netflix classic layout extension.

I now officially have no need to ever return to Firefox, which is sad in a way, but it happens to every browser eventually, just as it will one day happen to Chrome.

Gotta agree with that.

Once upon a time, Netscape was pretty good, but got loaded down with crap, like AOL and Real Player and other built-in things.

Even with only a few add-ons, FFx seems to have reached the same point.

Tried Firefox 5 because 4.0 is so slow. Switched to Chrome, but the darn thing crashes every 20 minutes!!! Ugh. there are no good browsers left.

^ I've never really had any of them crash much if at all.

Chrome crashed a couple times when I was saving file after file from the NYT crossword puzzle section. I think I just overwhelmed it with my blazing speed.

Maybe a complete uninstall & reinstall would fix your problem.

I never had any problems with Firefox 4, and so far I haven't had any problems with Firefox 5, either.

From your list of problems, the fault is either with your pc or with some of the extensions you are using.

I went over to chrome a while back and only make use of firefox when I need to use Zetero. I particularly like the fact that my bookmarks and extensions sync between machines - I know that firefox will do some of that but as an Android user and someone who uses a lot of google products it makes sense to keep it all "in-house".

The only thing I've never understood - why is there no chrome browser for Android? why is it "browser" which is developed by a different internal team at google?

Oh and Firefox 3 and 4 are both EOL and will not get any future security or bug fixes so anyone still using either version should update.

Firefox 5 took away a few of my important add ons and it was running really slow. I decided to switch back to Chrome and things seem to be working well. I am also looking for more extensions/addons so if anyone has any recommendations, that would be awesome.
