Firefly Revival?

This got brought up in another thread and it got me thinking it deserved its own.

Does anyone thing Firefly has any hopes of ever coming back into the mainstream? Be it a television revival or sequal to Serenity? Or maybe even an eventual reboot?

I'm on the negitive side of this. As much as I loved the show and movie, I think it's safe to say it's dead. The TV series was cancelled after only 14 episodes, some of which didn't even air. And the film failed to make back it's production/marketing cost. As good as Serenity was, it bombed. No studio is going to throw money at the franchise that has failed not once, but twice. Fan's should count themselves lucky we got one film cause I doubt it will ever happen again.

Now sure we will have comics and novels and such in the future, of that I'm sure. But as a mainstream franchise, I think it's safe to say we can hang up our browncoats.

Much as I would love it to return, I have long since accepted that it won't. We were lucky to get "Serenity," and we should be grateful that the story got the chance to wrap up.

That said, I am totally ready for Joss to head up a new show!

Its a good idea, but studios are to stupid to ever do i fear...

It has nothing to do with their stupidity. Firefly was an unsuccessful franchise. It may have been good, and it may have been jacked around in the beginning, and it may not have been given the best chance to survive, but to bring it back now would just be a silly financial move. Serenity barely broke even.

Bc it was mismanaged, it has near rabid fan base, if they made new series, and properly advertised it and showed it on normal times and not 2 in the morning or some other odd time it would def pick up.

EVER??? Forever ever ever???

(I love Firefly mainly for the characters/actors/dialogue but forget that)

There is an amazing premise. Colonials vs. Independents. With a failed experiment resulting in space zombies/reavers. All packed in a large solar system. It's workable.

^^^See, this is the part I'm still waiting for one of you browncoats to prove to me, cause that's not how I saw it...

Eh ... Firefly isn't as good as its most ardent supporters might claim ... but the show certainly had potential (Hint: there were elements -- the ensemble cast, the dialogue, the camaraderie, Serenity as a symbol of freedom -- that were absolutely compelling). But neither the series nor the film ever achieved the full potential of the concept or the production.

It's unfortunate that we'll never know whether or not Firefly could have reached its full potential. But on the other hand, what exists, is chock full of entertainment ... "potential."

It's gone, anything they did now would be a pathetic grasp at revival, especially with the original cast. Maybe 10 years from now (making the show almost 20 years old) the show could be rebooted with a new cast. It is a very interesting Universe and I would like to see it again sometime, just not soon.
Besides, the occasional Firefly reference in Castle is enough to keep me happy.

My God, I didn't know they did a movie! I have to go rent Serenity!

My God, indeed. Were you not using the internet in 2005?

It's rented. I live 10 minutes from my library and luckily they had it. I was a Buffy/Angel fan so I knew of Joss Whedon, but I knew nothing about Firefly when it was first put out. I watched the complete series about a year ago and I came away impressed. In my youth, I fancied myself a Science Fiction writer and spent time writing a bible for a universe that would have a ship like Serenity. It struck me how similar some of the concepts were. I guess great minds think alike.

Anyway, they talked about developing the show further on the DVD special features, but I hadn't heard anything about it, so I figured they weren't successful. Obviously, the wrong assumption.

Firefly in Live Action is over....unless we skip ahead 40 years to when Joss & Nathan get an "Old Indy" idea and want to put together a low budget web production. (ala Harrison Ford in Young Indy Jones Chronicles)

As a franchise... it will probably go on at some point. Comics and Novels are almost a continued presence for any franchise, especially the ones with small, yet rabid fanbases.

Ugh. Enough reboots. All you ever hear these days is "reboot".

Down with reboots.

^^ Yeah, reboot gets thrown around too much, but the FF universe is extremely interesting and I think it's worth another look. Not anytime soon though.

^ Yeah, Fox doesn't really have a choice on that one (or the other Marvel properties to which they have film rights). If they don't produce a film within certain periods of time, the film rights revert back to Marvel/Disney.
