Firebird's Sketch of the Week Series

Got a couple more semi-quick sketches done the last few days. I'm liking this stark style I've hit upon lately, it kinda pops off the page pretty nicely, I think.

SotW #87 / 2021 Artwork #102: Shouko Komi from Komi-San Can't Communicate.

SotW #88 / 2021 Artwork #103: Anime-styled Trek aliens: Vulcan, Ferengi, Klingon, Andorian, and Cardassian.

Rockford Files had the best theme song…that and Beretta
Oddly enough, I never have seen a single episode of The Rockford Files. My experience with Garner has almost exclusively been through the movies he was in.

Your anime-style aliens are great! Love the Vulcan's expression. The Cardassian reminds of that monster Crell Moset, though :cardie:

I must admit that I used characters from a few different anime series as the basis to build the alien “makeup” on top. The Vulcan is Yotsuya from Maison Ikkoku, and the Cardassian is Prof. Fuyutsuki from Evangelion. The one I’m proudest of is the Ferengi; I don’t think anyone could tell what character I used as the basis there.

Another weekend continues my procrastinating from working on my EVA-Trek manga by doing a bunch of other drawings instead. I've only had the motivation to draw in the basic panels for page 3 of the ET one-shot, and I'm hoping I'll be able to take Thanksgiving weekend to just bang out the art for the remaining 9 pages of the comic. But, we'll see how that goes...

SotW #89 / 2021 Artwork #104: The cast from Ken Akamatsu's Love Hina. This one will always have a special place in my heart, since it was the first manga I found on my own back in high school that wasn't based on the series that Cartoon Network's Toonami programming block. It opened up the world of manga and kindled my love for the slice of life and romance genres.

SotW #90 / 2021 Artwork #105: Commander William T. Riker, suavest first officer in the fleet. Based on my favorite on-set photo of Jonathan Frakes during the making of TNG.

SotW #91 / 2021 Artwork #106: Rei Ayanami from Evangelion in a kimono. Took a while to figure out the best way to draw in the floral pattern on her kimono, but I quite like the way it came out.

Been a pretty productive week at the sketchbook, deciding to continue my attempts to draw every major variant of Starfleet uniform we've seen across the franchise. Only missing TMP and the new 32nd century uniforms from Disco now! The only catch is that I seem to be unable to draw anything Star Trek without giving it an anime spin. Whether that's a downside or an added bonus is something I leave in the eye of the viewer.

SotW #92 / 2021 Artwork #107: Rui Tachibana from Domestic Girlfriend is less than enthused to try out the jumpsuit from Enterprise.

SotW #93 / 2021 Artwork #108: Mona-chan from My Charms Are Wasted on Kuroiwa Medaka models the mid-2250's uniform from Discovery. This one ranks as the most complicated one I've drawn yet, thanks to those blasted side panels with far too many little Starfleet deltas that I stupidly decided to draw by hand myself.

SotW #94 / 2021 Artwork #109: Najimi from Komi-Can't Communicate tries their hand at the seldom-seen skant uniform from early TNG.

The last couple days have been pretty productive on the EVA-Trek front... not because I finally buckled down and drew the one-shot comic. No, I finally completed the first draft of the series' 52-page writer's guide after getting through character bios for the twenty-eight listed characters for the series. Do you have any idea how exhausting it is coming up with at least a paragraph or two per character of backstory, and in some cases a page or more?

After getting that done, what else could I do but pump out more drawings?

SotW #95 / 2021 Artwork #110: The crew of the Bebop react to me running out of room to draw Ed because I'm an idiot that doesn't know how to frame his drawings properly.

SotW #96 / 2021 Artwork #111: Continuing my EVA-Trek series with a portrait of Lieutenant Commander Misato Katsuragi, Chief of Ops aboard the USS Nerv, NCC-71855.

Speaking of the EVA-Trek writer's guide, below are a few excerpts. I based the document off of TNG's bible, so you'll see a bit of common content between the two. The fun was adapting and expanding to fit the Evangelion lore alongside as seamlessly as possible. I won't share any of the character bios since those are full of spoilers, but I think this gives a good indication of the world I'm trying to come up with:

Was a little bored during my lunch break today, so I did this quick drawing (SotW #97 / 2021 Artwork #112) of Worf in less than 45 minutes, including penciling and inking. Actually surprised how close I got Michael Dorn's likeness - I've been having an issue trying to get live-action subjects looking correct when I don't outright trace from a reference.

Outside of this, things have been progressing on the Eva-Trek front at an incredible pace. I did a second draft of the writer's guide, which pushed it past 60 pages total. And then on Sunday night, I banged out 3-1/2 acts of a 5 act outline of a pilot episode script for the series, finally finishing it last night. There's only... 24 more episodes, plus a 2-hour movie finale for me to write after that. No pressure, right?

EDIT: Decided to also include a little graphic design I did for the writer's guide cover page, based on the cover for the TNG bible.

SotW #98 / 2021 Artwork #113: Finally crossed off the last major past Starfleet uniform design last night with this color drawing of the Admiral's dress uniform from TMP. I've now hit every released series and film from the Prime Timeline. The character design isn't supposed to be Kirk, I just drew a random face. I think he kinda reminds me a little of James Coburn.

And here are a few sample pages from the pilot episode script I'm working on for EVA-Trek. The quality of the writing might be debatable, but I'm a stickler for formatting accuracy and trying to match how the TNG scripts looked as close as possible:

SotW ONE-HUNDRED / 2021 Artwork #115:

FILE PHOTO, Stardate 48441.2 - Lieutenant J.G. Asuka L. Soryu is transferred to the USS Nerv, NCC-71855 following the completion of the Evangelion-class USS Kyoto, MU-02. Her first meeting with fellow pilot Shinji Ikari is... contentious, to say the least.

"Hmph! So,
you're the Third Child? I didn't realize Starfleet was so desperate for pilots since Wolf 359. How disappointing!"

I tell ya, with as much effort as I throw into the background of these EVA-Trek drawings, I'm gonna have an encyclopedic knowledge of every detail of the sets from TNG by the time I wrap this project up.
