Firebird's Sketch of the Week Series

And here's a special Christmas post, featuring my SEVEN-HUNDREDTH illustration!

Drawing 700 / 2025 Artwork 102: A Christmas party went wrong aboard the USS Voyager when poor Harry Kim got under the mistletoe in the holodeck.

bafkreib6eo6gdkou75uaoxdcd5tdoetoz5q2wb7avqfqjz3c3cyipsgu5e@jpeg

This one came to me in a vision when I realized it'd been far too long since I last climbed the steps of Peak Stupid.

Harry Kim?? Sorry, but that looks more like Sheldon Cooper.

Maybe that's why Young Sheldon keeps mooooving away from that cow in the opening credits.

Drawing 701 / 2025 Artwork 103: Haida-san from Unexciting Date. I discovered this manga earlier in the week and quickly binged through the translated chapters. It's really refreshing to read a seinen romcom series with characters that feel like actual people instead of a mass of tropes. I give it a big recommendation if you like the romcom genre!

Drawing 702 / 2025 Artwork 104: EVA-Trek Season 3 Production Art - Pieter Langley. Langley is the deadbeat birth father of Lt. J.G. Asuka L. Soryu. When last we saw Langley, he'd abandoned Asuka before she was born, moved to the Cardassian DMZ, and ended up joining the Maquis. At the end of season 2, he'd attacked and crippled the USS Nerv in a surprise attack.

EVA-Trek Season 3 Preview: What follows is a little teaser of the season 3 premiere episode, "The Next Storm, Part II."

EVA-Trek's third season premieres this March! Be there, or don't. I'm not your supervisor.

Happy New Year, everyone!

As Studio Firebird heads into 2026, I'm going to be doing a special series of illustrations to celebrate Star Trek's 60th anniversary. This year, each month will feature illustrations dedicated to a specific series in the franchise, in addition to my regular EVA-Trek production sketches. I'm looking at the following schedule for the year:

January: The Original Series and first six feature films
February: The Next Generation and its four features
March: Deep Space Nine
April: Voyager
May: Enterprise
June: The Kelvin Timeline movies
July: Discovery
August: Picard
September: Lower Decks
October: Prodigy
November: Strange New Worlds
December: Starfleet Academy

The idea is to present uniform variants and other aspects from each series I haven't drawn yet in the last 700 illustrations. Believe me - there are plenty of uniform designs I haven't gotten to yet. I've got sixty years of materials to pull from!

So now, as Dana Gould would say, it's on... to our filthy business.

EVA-Trek Production Report:

Production has been proceeding at a breakneck pace over in the writers room in the Hart Building on the studio lot, encompassing work on each of the final three seasons of the series. As such, it'll be less confusing to break it out by season:

Season 3: The season premiere movie, "The Next Storm, Part II," is into final blue page revisions. Episode 303 is locked into a final draft. The remaining episodes are up next for revisions.

Season 4: Story breaks are in-progress for the season, with the first seven episodes completed. During this process over the holidays, I determined the season had a little too much story for just 10 episodes, so the season order was increased to 11. That makes three seasons in a row where the episode order got bumped up.

Season 5: All twenty episodes of the final season have their basic premise and titles locked in at a minimum. The story arc has been thoroughly figured out, and multiple episodes are nearly ready to begin the script stage.

EVA-Trek Season Three premieres in just two months!

I'm thinking next week's illustrations will keep the Those Old Scientists era going with a focus on Star Trek: The Animated Series.

EVA-Trek Production Update:

Season 3: Work has steadily progressed towards locking the season's episodes for final drafts, followed by a quick blue revision page pass. I'll be locking the season finale's final draft sometime today, which essentially finishes production. Post production will start this week and stretch through the release of the finale.

Season 4/5: I completed the last of the story breaks for season 4's episodes! All that work ended up bumping the "Season 4 Story Arc" Document to 93 pages, making it the longest of the documents I've created since the start of the show.

bafkreihid7agey5ff2majvh6g5qpj3braz6h26mnhtx24bxysrflhp7i7u@jpeg

You'll note here that each season's final draft scripts have a specific cover color, mirroring what the 90's Star Trek series did. Season 1 was red, 2 yellow, 3 orange, 4 green, and then the fifth and final season will be blue.

The detailed story break/beat outlines for the eleven episodes season 4 take up the first half of the document. Season 5's 20 episodes are explored in the back half. My hope is to periodically work on further development of the "Season 5 Story Arc" document over the next year or so while I write season 4 after season 3 has released.

This week's post continues my yearlong Star Trek illustration series by moving things forward into The Animated Series! As a reminder, January is dedicated to the era of Those Old Scientists.

EVA-Trek Production Report:

As of now, all season 3 episodes are locked into a final draft with a blue revision page pass at a minimum. The season premiere movie, "The Next Storm, Part II" has gone into its fourth revision pass to green pages. By the time the episode premieres on March 6th, I think that script is gonna look like a rainbow.

Given the current events in the last couple days, continuing to work on my illustrations seems frivolous, but now more than ever my art is providing a refuge. So, my year-long Star Trek illustration series is moving into the TOS movie era, featuring uniforms from Star Trek: The Motion Picture (my favorite of the 14 feature films).

EVA-Trek Production Report:

Season 3: By the end of today, I'll have completed revisions to the last couple episodes of the season. That just leaves the writing of the various release comments and annotations which accompany each episode.

I also managed to finally break the story for a special episode that will drop on Star Trek Day this September as part of the franchise's 60th anniversary. Going into this year, I knew that EVA-Trek would have to join in with the celebration of such a milestone... especially since I missed writing something for Evangelion's 30th anniversary.

Season 4: I had a chance to refine a character arc for the season that I didn't realize I was missing when I locked the Arc document. Also made adjustments in a few episodes to clarify some story beats as well. As it stands, I think I'll be in a position to begin writing season 4 while season 3 is in release!

It was 5 years ago, this very day, that art changed my life…

After the worst of the first winter in the pandemic, I was stuck searching for something to do with myself during all that time stuck indoors. I’d been a doodler for years in middle and high school, but that faded away once I got older. So, I thought, why not dig out my old sketchbook and try drawing again?

That one decision on 1/29/2021 changed everything. Over 700 illustrations & 53 screenplays later, embracing my artistic side put me back in touch with the me that was always there, just waiting to come around again.

Here's a few of my earliest sketches - I've come so damn far since 2021...

2026 Recording 1: A cover I recorded this week of Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young's song "Ohio." Inspiration struck quickly, so this is the result of literally two hours of setup, recording, and mixing. I needed it to sound raw and unpolished, and I think it works.

EVA-Trek Production Report:

All season three episodes are locked and ready for release! I've gotten release notes completed for the first couple, and will try to have all those done over the course of the next few weeks before the premiere. During this period, I need to try to find time to complete the twenty-seven production sketches for key characters and locations... but who the hell knows when I'll find the time?

But in brighter news, that special 60th anniversary episode that I broke last week? Thanks to some motivation and inspiration the last couple days, I've already completed the first draft of the half-hour script! I should have that episode in fine shape by the time it drops on Star Trek Day this September.

Drawing 713 / 2026 Artwork 11: Kyoutarou Ichikawa from The Dangers in My Heart models the prototype uniform design for TNG that William Ware Theiss created and showed off in person to Gene Roddenberry and Bob Justman during pre-production. This design was ultimately turned down in favor of the tricolor design we're all familiar with.

EVA-Trek Production Update:

Season 3: Work still continues on writing the supplemental annotations and Ready Room specials for the season. I'll also begin working on the special illustrations for the season today. These will eventually be released in my Sketch of the Week series as the applicable episode premieres.

Season 4: Production officially began for the season last night when I completed the Teaser for season 4's premiere episode. If all goes well, I might be on track to have the season complete before the end of 2026. This is looking to be one of my most creatively busy years on record!
