Finished season one

I think they first developed the wraparound tunic to help distinguish the two Kirks in "The Enemy Within". After that, it was a regular part of his wardrobe.

Shatner's work schedule didn't give him time to work out. Towards the end of each season, he tended to put on a little weight. Legend is that the wrap-around helped hide his paunch better than the stretch pullover.
;)

Yes, it was needed to distinguish Good Kirk from Evil Kirk in "The Enemy Within."

Much like how Riker's copy wore a gold uniform instead of red in that episode of TNG, if I remember right.

I know that. I was talking about how it made sense to me now why the green tunic continued to make appearances after "The Enemy Within", to cover up Shatner's weight gain.

I still don't think that's the reason. If I remember correctly, its last appearance in season one is "Court Martial" which is the 20th out of 29 episodes shot.

Actually, I thought I read it as fact somewhere, but at my age reality and fantasy are a happy blurr. :)

^ Yeah that could be a reason too. I only have 4 episodes left of season 2. Hopefully I can stretch them out over the next 3 days.

Have fun! Curious what you'll think of "Assignment: Earth." Are you watching them in production order or airdate by the way?

Well there were two: The first one had a sort of combination crew/V-neck with the rank up around the collar, and the other one was more of a straight V with narrow black and gold trim and rank at the cuffs. Did Shatner outgrow one? Did the second one have added "control" features? Or is the wraparound/weight thing just a myth?
