Finished Season 1 and saw Episode 1 Season 2

I really enjoyed the first season Discovery. I grew to really like Michael Burnham and I thought the cast overall was excellent. Storytelling wise, it was sometimes a little hard to follow, but I thought the twist was effective.

I want to get to know some of the other cast members better like the helms woman and the robotic looking bridge officer.

I didn’t like seeing the doctor die. He did a great job.

I’m really enjoying Pike.

Yeah I noticed there is Discovery hate, but I haven’t read a single one of those posts because a) I don’t want to come across a spoiler b) I’m a lifelong Trek fan and wanted to form my own opinion.

There’s a little retconning going on with Spock having an adoptive sister, (which I guess might piss off some fans), and it’s weird yet interesting to see a human raised with Vulcan values. It’s different. And I like that.

Lorca was interesting! I forgot ti mention that in my first post. But I did have sneaky feeling that security dude was a Klingon (explaining their human appearance in TOS no doubt).

By the time I finished the second episode of season 2, I said to myself, "You know...I think Captain Pike needs his own spin-off series."

Anson Mount's portrayal as Pike is just wonderful. For those who aren't familiar with him, I told friends he's a sort of combination of Kirk and Picard. He has the Kirk swagger and charm, but has Picard's loyalty to Starfleet and its principles. Mount plays a perfect Star Trek captain.

I envy you getting to experience that for the first time. Pike was absolutely the highlight of season 2 for me.

I agree. He elevated Christopher Pike from a canonical curiosity to one of the best characters in the entire franchise.

Right? If you think about it, Mount honestly didn't have much to work with. I don't think Pike is very likable in The Cage and he comes off more like Picard does in the first season of TNG; he's almost all business and is pretty stern with the crew only letting a select few in to his personal space. Mount made Pike an extremely likable and assuring character. He's definitely the captain I'd want to serve with if I were in Starfleet.

Pike has always been my favorite character in the franchise after Spock. Mount was a great addition to an already great character.

Mount was basically playing a younger, in-his-prime version of Bruce Greenwood's Pike.
