Finding that "Feel Good" movie.

When I'm in the dumps, it can really vary. These are the things that help depending on the state I'm in:

- A fun / funny movie: Ghostbusters, Airplane, Over the Hedge, Raratouille, Ocean's 11

- A 'let some steam off' movie: Just about any Schwarzenegger flick (preferably Total Recall, Running Mna or, in really bad cases, some Commando), Demoliton Man or whatever kind of action movie you enjoy.

- Something to make you feel you're not alone with your pain: nuBSG. Seriously. I started watching this at a time when I was really down and out. And it really helped (in as much as tv can). I could really empathize with the suffering and pain the characters felt and, somehow, felt better about things in a way.

I will second Back to the Future and Stardust. Mary Poppins is also a good pick-me-up movie.

Here's a list of items that will make you smile through and through. Not just watching Lethal Weapon for nostalgia, because sometimes our favorite movies are full of conflict and angst. When I'm in a melancholy mood, I like to pull out these feel-good faves.

Definitely, Maybe with Ryan Reynolds, Isla Fisher, Elizabeth Banks, Rachel Weisz and Abgail Breslin. Really good feel good film.

I see some good tv shows here and a ton of movies that I haven't seen yet. Thanks for the suggestions.

With Christmas coming up I would suggest Love Actually, although as you say you were dumped so it might not be the best subject matter.

Try and find a copy of Scrooged, there's nothing like a sadistic spin on Dickins to warm the heart.

Young Frankenstein
Blazing Saddles
Independence Day
Armageddon

The last two, while cheesy, are good let's go kick ass, over the top action flicks. Not a whole lot of thought needed.

Here's an oldie but a goodie..

Local Hero

A mild comedy that brings a lot of quiet smiles and several healthy guffaws. Nice ending that may at first seem bittersweet, but upon reflection, is entirely appropriate.

The perfect movie for this would be Dragonfly. It may not seem uplifting at first, but stick with it. It's actually a really great movie with great actors, and I'm always surprised that more people haven't heard of it or seen it.

"Groundhog Day"
"Planes, Traines, and Automobiles"

And depending on if you want a laugh, "Office Space" (the 1999 film, not hte crappy American version of the British show).

I have to admit, I'm not doing too well right now. I'm always on the verge of crying most of the time. I'm unemployed, I live with my parents with huge bills floating over my head, and my girlfriend dumped me. I need something that'll cheer me up. A good movie perhaps? Something like Big Fish or Field of Dreams.
Keep away from a film called The Reflecting Skin.

When I'm in a funk, nothing perks me up more than Predator. For mindless action, constant gunfire and explosions, gore and language with some pretty good one liners... you just can't beat a good '80s action movie ;)
