Finally got to see TOS-R eps!

All I can say is: WOW!

The live action footage DOES look like it was shot yesterday in terms of image quality, etc...and I LOVED the new FX shots (I got a hold of Season 2, which has most of the really important FX eps).

I had a few minor nits (like the navigaitonal blinkers not being visible enough in some shots), but in terms of shot dynamics, framing, etc it just blew me out of the water!

Nicely done, CBS!

It is refreshing to hear an opinion of the Remastered ST that isn't wallowing in inner-child rape historonics or hyper-nitpicking.

Although it was a rushed, underfunded project (CBS) the creative team did a commendable job with their budget and deadlines. IMO

CBS Exec: We're going to underfund you and give you a short time window so you can do TOS-R. But just think... you'll be working EXACTLY how the guys who made the originals worked!
Remaster guys: Gee... thanks.

I do have to admit, TOS-R really is a beauty. I bought the Fan Collective Alternate Realities box set and they used the Remastered Trek for all the TOS and I have to say the image quality and colors are really really amazing, it DOES look like it was shot now as opposed to the 60s. No over grainy pictures, no washed out colors, no dirt spots, nothing to mar it. And the new SFX really add to it, it feels less cheesy... beyond some of the 60s typical over acting and soft focus and some of the props and set dressings, but eh, it adds to its charm.

I also like the fact that the planets look more like planets and not weird glowing balls in space.

I am a huge supporter of TOS-R. I think the new effects were very respectful to the original effects style and in some cases, improved the quality of the episodes.

Unlike some, I could see that the old shots just weren't going to hold up.

I would have been happy with just CG replacement of the shots (ie, exact recreation), but I'm glad that CBS picked a good, respectful team that was willing to take the risk and push it out just a little farther.

Subtle little things like the tweaks to the Lexington's viewscreen in "The Ultimate Computer" were as impressive to me as the bigger main FX changes.

And technically, it's not over just yet!

The Remastered "Cage" has yet to air on any stations, and is the only one of the 80 classic episodes that has not been aired yet. I keep hearing it is slated to run sometime early this year, possibly the late winter or beginning of spring.

Just got season 2 today and watched The Doomsday Machine. Vastly improved viewing experience over the original.

I love TOS-R as well.

ONE gripe: WHY is there no English subtitles?!?! Spanish? Si. French? Oui. English? Ummm. . . No.

WTH?!?! The earlier DVD boxed sets have english subtitles. . . Oh well. . .

Anyway, does anyone know of any hidden easter-eggs in the TOS-R sets?? There were some hidden goodies in the "regular" DVD boxed sets. Just curious...............

Dead on.....

The lack of english subtitles annoys me. I don't mind so much, but my girlfriend watches most programs with subtitles on.

The remastered box sets are closed-captioned, although I also would prefer subtitles in English.

I have watched every episode of Star Trek Remastered and loved it. There are a few places I wish they had gone further with the enhancements but overall it's great.

I am disapointed they didn't redo the CGI Enterprise in the first 8 or so episodes to match the better one used in the rest of the series though. Throws me off a bit.

I have both sets and some of the TOS-R redo's are amazing in how they can elevate an episode. The Doomsday Machine is more exciting and Tomorrow is Yesterday is fricking incredible. The atmosphere shots and the one shot of the jet which corrects the pitch black sky during daylight ("under cloud cover" didn't do it) are the shit, but what really does it is the time travel climax. It NEVER made sense before, since the visuals never matched the dialog. Now, it's great and thrilling to see.

However, I still carry on my preference to the original prints. The CGI shots have that Babylon 5 effect, like they are two totally different shows. Plus my brain knows that there was no way to do this in 1966 and the majority of the live action shots still look like they are from another era. Then, wham, the CGI comes in. Sometimes it's great, sometimes not, but it is always noticable.

Plus, even with the limitations of the technology, some effects shots have more energy and style than the current CG stuff. When Decker tells Sulu "hard about give me some distence", the old show had that stock shot of the ship tilting away. The TOS-R has a slower moving traching show which might have made more sense, but had less energy. Same with the Enterprise leaving the energy barrier in WNMHGB.

Sure, the new effects are more up to date and smooth withno bleeding matte lines and so on. But at least the old effects felt like they belonged there from the same time the other stuff was filmed.

However, I like what they have done for the most part with the new stuff and if it gets TOS new fans, all the better.

Though I prefer the originals, I really love the look and depth that TOS-R adds to the episodes :)

Especially the Starbases and cities :)

Agreed, Eminiar 7 looks amazing. Actually, some of the best work involves the planetscapes.

And the new Scalosian cityscape in "Wink of an Eye" is awesome as well. There are even vines and weeds growing on the walls and streets in some areas of the new vista to show how the city has been all but abandoned to nature because the people are now hyperaccelerated.

I guess I'm going to have to go against the grain here. I'm not a fan of the TOS-R. Yes the new scenes look spectacular but they don't look like they fit in the show. It just looks too CGI.

I didn't really notice a difference in quality of the live action footage. Of course I'm not using an HD TV. But I can understand how one using an HD TV would think the TOS-R would look better compared the the SD version. Since SD shows look like crap on HD TVs.

The enchanced matte painting scenes were cool but they were too distracting.

Basically eveything looked too computer enhanced. Maybe if they used an actual miniature instead of a computer model it would have looked better.

The tradeoff I suppose when you mix 2006-08 CGI with 1965-69 celluloid and models. There's almost no way to make the old film stock look like/match the feel and appearance of the new CGI visuals so the show is going to look a little disjointed. But to be fair, many of the original opticals and visuals made back then were grainy and unfocused as well. How many times did the Enterprise fly by the camera and the starboard warp nacelle faded in and out or looked like it was being eaten by acid because of the limits of the bluescreen of the time?
